Show p 1. Eddie Bauer First Ascent Microtherm BC Jacket $299 If you're looking for an all-in-one winter jacket suited for pretty much anything Old Man Winter decides to throw your way, this is your numero uno. 800-fill down and a 20k/20k waterproof shell make the Microtherm BC jacket a one stop shop. We put this thing through the ringer — snowshoeing, ice climbing, skiing, winter backpacking, and regular everyday use. The Microtherm BC did not disappoint. Chest vents and a breathable shell made it even more comfortable when the temps weren't quite stupid cold. It's no wonder it took home the Backpacker Magazine 2012 Editors' Choice Snow Award. 2. Marmot Guides Down Jacket -- $200 When warmth is your top priority, the Marmot Guides Down Jacket has you covered — literally. We tested it out during the middle of a blizzard. Even with just a T-shirt underneath, we stayed warm in 20 degree temps. Thanks to its water-resistant down filling, you can stay dry and toasty in wet conditions. You'll still need a waterproof shell though, if you're looking to stay 100 percent dry. The Guides Down jacket is pretty "puffy;' so keep that in mind for layering. 3. Mountain Hardwear Thermostatic Jacket $200 Traveling light but don't want to sacrifice warmth? The Mountain Hardwear Thermostatic Jacket is designed for just that. Seriously, this jacket is so light that when the box arrived on our front porch, we thought it was empty. That's a serious plus for anyone looking to shed a few ounces on their upcoming trip to the backcountry. We must say, this jacket is worth loads more than its miniscule weight. 4. The North Face Boundary Triclimate Jacket $259.95 This incredibly durable winter coat offers more than simply what meets the eye. Aside from the waterproof outer shell, it also features a zip-in second layer, made of soft-as-silk fleece. The integrative design makes it possible for the wearer to swap out this under layer with any other North Face jacket, making the coat easily adaptable. This versatile and breathable winter coat is a must for anyone looking to brave the icy winter storms as the double layer will keep you warmer than any of its competitors. wasatchmagazine 11 |
