Whiting He has Lana Anderton will tell you theres just about no one she appreciates more these days than Duchesne County Search and Rescue members who turned out in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 28 to help look for her teenage son, Adam, who was lost in the Uinta Mountains. Shell also tell you she hopes she never, ever has to have anything to do with them again. The Anderton familys outing to Chepeta Lake started like dozens of other camping trips the Roosevelt family had taken together over the years. Lana and her husband Carl had packed up their kids, friends and other family members, loaded their horses and headed out Friday morning, July 26, to spend the weekend in the outdoors. It was a typical camping trip until about 8:30 p.m. Saturday night when Adams friend Kenny Hindu and his cousin Gilbert Wall ran intocamp yelling that they had lost Adam!" The three boys had jumped on a a few hours earlier and left camp intent on finding a waterfall that had told them about. They were just going to look at the waterfall and come back. Its just 20 feet off the road. I told the boys they should go look at it Well, they spotted a waterfall about 3 miles off the road, across the canyon and thats where they headed," said Lana. The boys came to a 100 foot cliff which prevented them from reaching the waterfall, so the trio sat on the edge of the cliff before jumping up and running back to the a whole new appreciation for the power of prayer." who quickly responded. Lana made the hour and drive into Roosevelt to fill up her truck with gas and was met by Duchesne County Sheriff Deputy Brad Draper and search and rescue member Keith Hansen who followed her up to the mountain. As temperatures cooled down to about 40 degrees Adam found himself wandering and trying to keep warm. He was wearing jeans and u d lightweight sweatshirt with a shirt underneath. He had nothing but a broken lighter that he had found on the road, and a short-sleeve- four-wheel- er key. Now following the river in the dark, while tiying to get back to where he was separated from hiB friends at the waterfall, Adam tried to cross the river bank but slipped on a wet rock and fell into the cold water. In an attempt to get warm he broke off a brunch of a pine tree, huddled between two big rocks and tried to sleep. It was the longest night of his life. It felt like a week, said Adam. He spent a good portion of the night praying and making some promises in return for a favor from his Heavenly Father. I wok saying, if I try to do better in my life will you help me get home?" Hu said a lot of prayers while he was out there, "Lana confirmed. He has a whole new appreciation fiir Uie power of prayer. He was out there alone but he had that line between him and God. Back at camp Lana and Curt were living every parent's worst nightmare. Searchers found Adam's footprints near the edge of the cl i ffw here his friends hod last reported seeing him and were concerned that he may have fallen off a ledge. Lana tried to push away the worst case scenarios, but admits she found herself planning her son's funeral selecting songs and speakers. It was sickening at the time, but she can joke about it now. She said Brad Draper helped her cope with the situation by remaining positive and insistingshedo the same. When dawn started to break Adum knew he had to continue to find his way back to the waterfull. When I could see I found the smallest cliff and started climbing back up. As soon as I got to the top I gut right in frontof the waterfall and walked straight until I could see a road, he reluled. I started kind of remembering things like where we broke off branches the day before. I got to the top of the hill where I could -- SEE MISSING TEEN on page 20 four-wheel- er Volunteers Sought for Parenting Workshop facilitator worka Center is Northeastern sponsoring two-da- y Counseling in the upcoming shop for those interested in assisting as Nurturing Parenting Program. Kenny and Gilbert made it back to the road where they waited for about an hour for Adam to show up since he had the key to the When they realized he wasnt just playing a joke on them they flagged down a passing car to take them the 5 miles back to camp. When they got back they were scared. They said while they were running they could see each other, but when they looked back it was like Adam had fallen out of sight. They werent sure what had happened to him, Lana related. Although they didnt know it at the time, as Adam was racing his he friends biudt to the figured he was heading the wrong way and tried to correct his path, but in doing so he ended up in the middle of nowhere. He was in rugged country along the west fork ofthe Whiterocks I thought f I followed the river for enough I would end up back at camp, but it kept splitting up. He abandoned that idea and turned back to retrace hia steps, but by that time night had set in. At camp a search quickly ensued and from about 8:30 to 10 p.m. the Anderton family rode up and down the road near where the boys had They yelled parked the Adams name, but because he was down in a bowl with the sound of rushing rivers filing the air, he waa unable to hear anything.
