"T 31 It is a curious ftet about language that the languages of primied tive peoples an no less capable of conveying whatever thoughts speakers may wish to convey, even the most sophisticated, than the languages of the most advanced civilisations. The me is true of artistic expression. Ancientart worthy ofthe name speaks to us as forcibly as the most recent canvas, score, or poem by a creditable Like to wait tlhe last mionunto? artist. This notion about the timeless-nes- a of art was reinforced for me in a recent issue ofthe NewYorker magazine. Reviewingperformanoee of worka by a mm considered the father of first to realty make it a opara-th- e Ross noted memorable art form-Al- ex at several points in his article similarities between Monteverdis musical expression (he lived from 1567 to 1643) and works by composers ofour day. He speaks of"Stravainskyan dissonances for instance, and of "the famous lamenting basses which are Mill a fixture of pop music in the seme of Monteverdis Orfeo. "As I listened, he notes in his concluding paragraph, "I kept hear-in- g foreshadowings of ftiture music; a hint of the finale of Shostakovichs Fifth Symphony in the rising flourishes ofthe Prologue; apremonition ofTristans death in the chilling chords that mark the passing of Eurydice; a turn around the Lohengrin-esqu- e words your beautiftil Eurydice; a touch of Barbers Adagio in the sobbing of the strings. Noting "that Orfeo was seldom performed until the late twentieth century Ross doubts that "these echoes.. Jue..xonscious ones; rather, he suggests, they seem to come from of a communal source, a well-spripassion and lament. Monteverdi found it, took it, let it flow. And these later composers also found it and exploited it for their own purposes. Our recent experience here in the Basin with A Midsummer Night's Dream pointed up the modernity of this five hundred plus year-ol- d piece. For one thing, lovers' foibles haven't changed all that much. One Miltbn scholar wrote a book on that great 17th century poets works which he aptly titled The Modernity of Milton. Art is long; life is brief, says an old aphorism. Art is a wondarflil connector between generations and between the contemporary and the ancient, the highty civilised and the "primitive.
