When the dollar bill is slipping And inflation's on the wing, When the nickel, dime and penny Will not buy a single thing: That's the time to start reflecting . . . Who's the culprit in the crime? Who is shrinking our proud dollar? Who's diluting yours and mine? When the national debt is rising By the billions every year, Unemployment checks are killing Those incentives we hold dear; That's the time to start reflecting . . . Who's the culprit in the crime? Who is handing out the money Just to piay for loafing time? When our work force has forgotten That production is the key. To a vibrant, healthy nation. With a strong economy. We had better start reflecting ... That the culprit in the crime Hides behind this tricky slogan . . . "Equal pay for equal time." When welfare checks and food stamps Have become an open door, No longer just for needy folks Nor just the "worthy poor." ' We need to keep reflecting i,".' . X That the culprit in the crime, . , , Has spawned an ugly monster Which grows bigger all the time. When the octopus, regulation, Closes it's tenacles tighter still. Killing, one by one, our freedoms With directives from "the hill"; That's the time to start reflecting . . . Who's the culprit in the crime? Who is choking off our freedoms, With red tape and wasted time? When equal opportunity Doesn't apply to all of us, And regimented schooling Means a long ride on a bus: Isn't it time to start reflecting . . . .Who's the culprit in the crime? Need we punish little children, Will it really help mankind? When through international folly, . -- .. Are we "SALTed" down by DETENTE, Forcing us to lag behind? When our once proud flag "Old Glory" Doesn't quite so proudly fly, And our patriots are asking, "Where's that slogan, DO OR DIE?" It is time to start reflecting : . . Who's the culprit in the crime? Where, oh, where's our nationa I spirit, With that tingle in our spine? There is time, but precious little, We can still turn things around. If we'll only face up to it For the culprit has been found. in part, to education. Ws have a right to get our money's worth. Parents ARE intelligent enough to assess the quality of education. It is not open defiance of authority to disagree with educators andor educational theories. Here are my suggestions: 1. Concerning Barbara Morris editor ial, "Your Child and the Change Agents, I have a few observations. , 1. We are very naive to think that the conditions in the above-mentionarticle do not exiqt; . all educators everywhere are jthat above corruption; --that some teachers are not conspiring to bring about undesirable sochd ' changes (i.e., alternate sexual lifestyles). Fortunately, here in our school district, we have teaehers who generally believe in the same bask philosophy as do the majority of the residents. 2. Federal Money (our taxes) given to education is in no way a guarantee, of the QUALITY of education. Ironically, ever since the Federal government began its aid to education 20 years ago, the S.A.T (Scholastic Aptitude Tests) verbal scores of high school seniors have fallen from 477 to 427. S.A.T. math scores have dropped from 498 to 467 in the last 10 years alone. 500 is supposed to be AVERAGE I More young people are graduating from high schools with less knowledge of the basic academic skills than those who were only able to finish the 8th grade a few decades ago. None of the 18,000 federal employees to be hired by the new Department of Education, with an annual budget of 114,000,000,000, will teach one teacher or child to read or spelL THIS ISNT A 8. The purpose of public education is to teach our children reading, writing, arithmetic, and help them become literate adults. 4 Many dedicated, sincere teachers, are graduating from college and going into the classroom with teachii methods that are now being prove faulty and inadequate. 6. Contrary to what many people feel, parents DO have a say in the education of children. Without the kids, who would the teachers teach? Our state, local and federal taxes to, . If we're honest in reflecting , -- We're the culprits in the crime, If we fail to be selective : At the polls . . . come voting time. As election day approaches, Let us gather all the facts; Have we learned to tell the difference 'Tween the Patriots and the Quacks? Well, it's time to start reflecting, For the culprits in the crime . . . s, Could be uniformed, c . non-voter- and 'lection time. Let's not blame the other fellow, free-loade- rs . .. ed to or Just because he cannot see, That this precious thing called FREEDOM Must be fought for constantly. Let us help him in reflecting ...
