Show . , 6 STANDARD Daombfg. 1 . . Unions win string grows with victories 977 The Union Cougars run their string to 4 wins and no losses last week by virtue of two victories. Wednesday they dumped Duchesne 97 to 55, and Friday saw them outlast Millard, 60 to 48. This Friday the Cougars will entertain a talented crew from Emery high school. The home game for the Cougars will be a good test for them since Emery handed Altamont a 66-4- 4 defeat, while Union topped Altamont by only 16 points. However, Emery has been beaten this year by Millard, who in turn lost to to 55 per cent in the second half. They hit 75 percent from the free throw line for the game. Heaton lead the Cougars in scoring, with 20 points, followed by Rasmussen with 17 and Chasel 12, Millards scorers were their two big men, Peterson with 16, and Hosman with 15. Hosman fouled out late in the fourth quarter, and Peterson was railed with goal tending and a foul at the dosing buzzer, giving Union a play. Union. Coach Brad Monks reports that the Union ball club is progressing well, and shows great promise. The two games last week were excellent defensive combined with periods of efforts, outstanding offensive prowess. He expressed some concern on fouls, however. CHECKED SHOT Smith named to AAA second team all-stat- e Bret Smith, a senior at Union high school and a three-yea- r varsity player with the Cougar football team, was recently selected as a member of the Football Team in both the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune. Smith, who played both offensive and defensive tackle, wu one of twelve young men chosen for the Class AAA second team. The Deseret News stated All-Sta- te that there had been a 93 per cent return of the ballots in this years coaches poll SMith has received letters of interest from the coaches at several area universities, as well as the United State Military Academy at West Point. A high point of his 1977 football season was the touchdown he scored-- a rare occurance for a tackle. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Smith of Roosevelt Other Cougar football players honored in the Deseret News poll were Ralph Sullivan and Doug Chasel, who were selected for the Region Five eecond team. . excellent ball handling, which should make them a strong force in their league this year. Union continued their third period push record, hitting for 28 points during that frame, while holding Duchesne to 8 points. At the half, the score was Union 44, Duchesne 30. At Fillmore, the Cougars took the sails out of the Millard game, by controlling their two big players, and getting more than their share of the rebounds. Millard, with Peterson at 6 ft. 6, and Hosman at 6 ft. 5, started out in a ball control game, with the first quarter score 8 to 7, in Millards favor. Things were only slightly more aggressive in the second quarter, with Union moving ahead by 24 to 20 at half time. But again the big third period saw Union dump in an additional 16 points, while holding Millard to only 4. Heaton controlled the boards, pulling down a total of 16 rebounds during the game, taking the effectiveness away from Millards big men. He has had three years wrestling experience, enjoys wrestling and rodeo and last year was awarded the outstanding wrestler award at the Junior High. He has opened up this year's wrestling season with two impressive wins over Wasatch and Lehi, who are ranked second and third in AA wrestling this year. Congratulations Mr. Energetic. All-stat- e J. V. Craig Addley, a senior running back on Duchesne high school's Eagle football e team, was chosen for the football teams by both the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune.
