The Roosevelt and Duch- - to cut oil production OPEC is likely Alarmed by a relentless slide in oil prices, OPEC members sre likely to agree to cut production by as much as 1.4 million barrels a day when the cartel's delegates meet next week, an OPEC official said Monday. Such a cut would be as much as 400,000 barrels a day larger than the potential reduction aired publicly in recent weeks by members ofthe Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. OPEC members are considering cutting output by 1.2 million to 1.4 million barrels a day, or five percent to six percent of their official production, said the OPEC ofticial, speaking on condition of anonymity from the group's heudquarters in Vienna, Austria. The comments came after OPEC Ali Rodriguez told Secretary-genera- l reporters that cuts of more than one million barrels a day were a "possibility." Rodriguez, speaking in Kuala Liunpur. Malaysia, did not specify the exact size of the possible cuts. World crude prices have continued to weaken due to the sharp decrease in glnhul economicactivity, aslumpcom-pounde- d by the terrorist attacks on the United States. On Friday, the price for OPECs bench mark blend ofseven crudes was $ 1 7.8 1 a barrel, down 30 percent from $25.56 a barrel on Sept. 10 the day before the attacks. The price for December contracts of North Sea Brent crude slipped 33 cents to $ 1 9.44 a barrel on the International Petroleum Exchange in London. December contracts oflightsweet crude fell 16 cents to $20.02 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after fulling as low as $19.76. RepresentativeofOPEC's 1 1 member nations plan to meet Wednesday of next week to assess market condi-- t ions and set production policy. OPEC, which produces about 40 percent of the world'scrude, hasannouncedcuts in output three times this year already OPEC members Iraq, Venezuela und Qatar have taken the lead in calling for the group torurtuil production further in hopes nrbut.tresMngprices. All three hare called recently for an additional cut of one million barrels, or four percent ofOPEC's ofTicial duily output of 23.2 million barrels. For such a strategy to have the desired impact, however, suppliers such as Norway, Russia and Mexico would ha ve to cut their output in parallel with OPEC. So far, most Ini ve refused, meaning tliat they would gain market share at OPEC'Bcxpcnse if the cartel's members were to cut production on their own.
