M Iverson In general it appears that th the school machinery is running as smoothly as conditions will permit and that some very efficient work world Is being accomplished in the vari- vari iS t ous departments To say that we Tv are not meeting with some very difficult problems would be attempting attempting attempting at at- tempting to camouflage the facts There are children in this district who are of legal school age Last years year's total enumeration enumeration enumeration tion was 2983 Our school population population population tion has been increased by 68 pupils pupils pu pu- pils pUs over last years year's count i Of this total number there are 1599 boys and 1452 girls From this total there are 34 boys and 41 girls who are attending public schools in Utah outside of the Duchesne Duchesne Duchesne Du Du- Du- Du chesne District There are 24 boys and 34 girls attending private schools in J Utah and d b 7 boys ys and d 12 girls who are attending schools outside of Utah There are a few who are legally excused because of poor health distance from tl the e school invalid fathers widowed mothers etc This number is com- com small yet herein lies one of our serious problems One boy and 29 girls are excused excused excused ed because of being married It appears that they have other res res- One girl however who was married during last school year r remained right at work and completed her high school course Such cases as these ae deserving of special mention In the Duchesne District there are only 4 boys and 3 girls between the ages of ten and seventeen who cannot read and write We have the same numb number r of regular teachers at work as we had last year There was a turnover of 20 teachers when when comparing this years year's group with those who taught here last year Of this this' ning fling or inexperienced teachers Two new bus lines were added to the seventeen routes previously established These are the Mountain Mountain Mountain Mount Mount- ain Home to Mt Emmons and the Highland to Roosevelt Roosevel t lines We Ve are transporting element elementary elementary ele ele- ment ry pupils and high school pupils to and from eight different communities The greatest greatest great great- great I est distance any pupil is transported transported transported trans trans- transI ported is miles Our local Board is planning that schools shall run the full time which is 32 weeks for the elementary elementary element element- ary nry grades and 35 weeks for the high schools Should it happen however that the funds ae not available with which to complete this full period a date for closing closing closing clos clos- ing of schools will be decided upon later The situation looks brighter bright bright- er for a full term than it did a month ago Strict economy has been put into into into in in- to operation in practically every case where it has been possible to economize without seriously hampering hampering hampering ham- ham the wok wole Our teachers are cooperating very nicely on this i phase of the program With the continuation of this hopeful and helpful on the part Spart of the teachers the patrons and the board members it appears appears appears ap ap- ap- ap pears that this years year's work may yet b counted as successful even though thou h the blue sky sometimes mu I I I I I I mu has a dull dull dull- appearance pp e. e We Ve have so many things for which we may well be thankful that the temporary discomforts or Inconveniences should not be considered too seriously Let us face the issues squarely be optimistic and cooperate and make the best of our pur school situ situ- A slogan on the w wall of Mr Walter Valter E.
