Show ' ' UINTAH BASIN RECORD Thursday. March 12. 19S3 OF EACH WEEK PUBLISHED THURSDAY Jennie Graham following are .excerpts from a letter repaved, from Conrad B. Hollenbeck, TESN, who is serving in Communications Branch of the U. S. Naval forces in the Aleutian Islands, to his mother, Helen B. Mott, of Duchesne: Dear Mom and All: Just a line to let you know that everything is running smoothly here We have been having a lot of storms up here for the last few days, and what I mean to tell you they are some humdingers. We have a hard time getting to work and back, but so far we have made it every time. You asked me what TESN means and Ill try to explain it to you. The TE means that I am a teleman and the SN means that I am a seaman, so put them together and I am a teleman seaman, or in other words I am striking for a teleman rate in Uncle Sams Navy. You asked about my hand. It will be O K. and I can use it as good as I ever could. In fact. I sometimes think even better. I was reading in All Hands the other day that if an officer gives the big brass a bad time, they have an old saying How would you like duty in the Aleutians. So you can see what I mean When I say Ill be very happy when this hitch up here is over. I had quite an experience the other night, while on duty. The wind blew down all the power lines and of course shut off communications. I had to go down and put the communications building on emergency power. It was the first time 1 had ever started a deisel en gine and I was quite worried for a while, didnt know if could do it, but I did and got , . Telephone) Oiredtory d dark-cratere- . We have been having a little trouble with the volcanos up here. The volcano which erupted both Sunday and Monday cast a dirty smoke, hung like a deep blanket over the pemsula. The dust spewed into the sky 8 miles high and spread out 100 miles or more, according to reports and aerial d reconnaissance. The cone appeared to be about 10 miles from Mount Katmai, which first was believed the source- - of Sundays first- giant pillar of smoke. Later, commercial fliers familiar with the region, said it was either Mt. or Mt. Trident, but apparently it was a now volcano. It was reported at first by a reporter of the Kodiak Mirror, who made a flight with the Navy to the area, that no lava was flowing from the center of the new volcano. He also said that. two rivers, formerly frozen solid, had melted and were running nearly free of ice, while others in Katmai National Monument remained frozen. Orange colored ash on the mountain sides and in the valleys were broken occasionally he said, by white streaks from snow slides. Although two large eruptions have occured, no villages have been endangered, but the loss of animal life may be heavy. This is the report as we ' have But it is a sight never to be forgotten.
