Colliers throughout drome, Weekly. The Record Does Expert Printing BLUEBELL By C. II. Wilkinson Your alfalfa can make seed if you have fairly deep soil to hold the moisture and if you have a fair stand of healthy alfalfa. Your seed crop will depend upon what you do and when and how you do it. Right now, most Uintah Basin alfalfa fields are badly infested with weevil, tarnish bugs, and aphis. In some fields the hay crop is not as good now as it was a few days ago Cut your hay now while it is still good hay and save what you have. Be sure to cut clean. You will take off the unhatched eggs of these insects in the hay. 'rnen. cuuvaie to a shallow dry dust mulch. Use some such tool as spike tocjth harrjow, Swedish harrow, brush drag, or wire drag. A few layers of woven wire fence under your spike tooth harrow makes a good implement. It should not go deep. What you want is to make hot dry dust, and clear the field of shade and feed for the insects. The direct rays of the summer sun will kill them in just a few minutes. Keep your field bare for a week after cutting. Kill the weeds while you are about it, and have a clean field. Let your second crop alfalfa take its time to start. You want it to come slowly, and make short, tough, weedy stems. These will produce buds and blossoms soon after they get above the ground and the blossoms will set burrs very soon after that. Your crop will seed from the ground up as it grows. It will not strip because of weather changes. Aphis and Tarnish bugs do not like this tough woody alfalfa. Poison your grasshoppers before they leave the hatching ground. By Mrs. Glen Sorensen Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Stevens and children of Oakley are visiting relatives here for a few days.
