The first instance of the burning of a negro recorded in the early American press may be found in Niles Register, published at Baltimore, of Feb Thomas Hancock of Edge- 5, 1820: field district, South Carolina, was lately killed by two of his slaves. One of the slaves is condemned lo be burned to death. In May, 1836, a murderer at St. Louis was regro seized by a mob of white men, tied to a tree and burned to death. In December of the same year 1836 a negro who killed his master, a Mr. Husky, near Hot Springs, Ark., was taken from the sheriff by a mob ol whites and burned.
