Show TRUTHS. On the front page of this issue ol Truth appears an articlo on tho paving pav-ing contract muddle. If Truth might bo pardoned for presuming to make a suggestion to such high nnd mighty pei'sonages as Mayor Thompson, Acting Act-ing Mnyor Davis, Chairman Leonard of the board of public works and other members of that august board, that suggestion would be that for tho public good that contemplated paving pav-ing should be commenced without delay. de-lay. The property owners in many cases havo already paid the money to defray tho cost of tho paving and they nnd tho general public want the paving pav-ing done right quickly. Contractor Moran's bid was the lowest of the latest set of bids received, but It was some $11,000 or $12,000 higher than the lowest bid nmong tho set of bids received and rejected last April. There is general regret that the lowest April bid was not accepted and tho contract let at that time, in which case tho paving would by this time have been well under way. Now Truth's tuggestlon Is that Contractor Moran reduco his bid by the $11,000 or $12,-(100 $12,-(100 necessary to bring It down to tho level of tho lowest bid made In April and that tho boanl of public works and the council show that they aro possessed of at least horse sense, put aside this play for party advantage and do something for tho people, close tho contract on that basis and let the work proceed as expeditiously as possible. pos-sible. This suggestion Is made free of charge, but wo have an Idea it will meet with favor. J & Talking about ex-Senator Kearns being be-ing a hoodoo. Elsewhere in this issue appears somo of the facts which go to establish Mr. Kearns' reputation as a hocdoo. Since that was penned another an-other gruesome thing has come to our knowledge that adds to tho weight of evidence. Tho young man, Mr. Drls-coll, Drls-coll, a most exemplary young fellow, who was killed by an explosion In a scda water manufactory a few days ago is a near relative of ox-Senator Kearns. Mr. Kearns was no further responsible for that distressing accident acci-dent than his role as a hoodoo connects con-nects him with It, but it is ono moro fact worthy of consideration. Then there is Chief Justice Bartch, a friend and supporter of Mr. Kearns when he thought It was to his advantage to play that part, and act as ho did as messenger boy for Kearns. His vision of fortune which would enablo him to retire fiom the bench has vanished in-thin in-thin air. So havo his chances for remaining on the bench after December Decem-ber 31 next, and ho has gone to Washington) Wash-ington) on a wild goose chase to prevent pre-vent the confirmation of H. E. Booth as United States District Attorney, and to secure tho place lor himself. 0 & Salt Lako county will elect twolvo members of tho Legislature ten repress rep-ress atives nnd two senators next fall. As thirty-two aixs a majority, our delegation is something worth having. Except In the now fading contingency of Senator Smoot being unseated, how-ovor, how-ovor, the local lawmakers will have nothing but local affairs to attend to, nnd perhaps then these will receive some greatly needed consideration. Tho state statutes aro in as bad shape as they were beforo tho present code was adopted, and thero are abuses without number to connect. Goodwin's Weekly speaks of "Samuel "Sam-uel B. Thurman" as ono of tho great Democrats of recent years. Call It Allen Al-len G. and wo will stand In. Tho statement goes out with semiofficial semi-official authority that Judge Barkis beg pardon, Bartch has got n good-sizod good-sizod coon treed nt national headquarters. head-quarters. Like the one Davy Crockett was after it will not wait to be shot but will drop off the limb right into his game bag. Tho Democrats to the number of a round score met in tho office of Mar-tlneau Mar-tlneau & Clark on Wednesday evening and agreed with unusual accord to do things in the coming campaign. Thost who thought they were going to play 'possum are thus doomed ' to disappointment. disap-pointment. A rule of law Is that wo must recover re-cover on the strength of our own title, net on tho weakness of our adversary's. adversa-ry's. Yet, our friends, the Democrats, figure on winning the c-ming election through Republican weakness because of deflections to tho Americans. Maybe May-be they may and p'raps not. These who thought that towering young statesman, P. P. Christensen, was engaging in another of those jokes for which he Is somewhat noted when he gave it out that he was a candidate can-didate for congress, were away off In their reckoning. Tho handsome county coun-ty attorney is In the fight for all thero Is in it and there Is no nonsense about It, that is, so far as as his intentions go. Candidates for the many positions to be ladeled out next fall aro not yet as thick as green gooseberries in the mackerel season, but they are cropping out here nnd there. Salt Lako county will provide directly for some dozen patriots and incidentally for heaven knows how many, besides participating par-ticipating to tho extent of about 30,000 votes In the choice of congressman and supreme court judge. ! & j The typo for tho Salt Lake Tribuno is now being set up at tho Deseret News Office. Ye Gods! will wonders never cease. The following notice does not appear nt tho head of tho editorial columns of tho Tribune: Announcement: Until further notice, on account of the recent flro, destroying our Llneo-type Llneo-type machines, tho hierarchy will set up tho typo for Tho Tribuno and ex-erclso ex-erclso a general monitorshlp over our editorial columns. The morning edition of the Desoret News, commonly called tho Salt Lake Tribune has improved lately in the language of its editorials. Is It im possible that Editor Penrose Is allowed to uso tho blue pencil on Editor Cannon's Can-non's effusions. Now that tho Tribuno is being printed print-ed at tho printing establishment of the hierarchy, how can that paper keep Its contract with tho good ladles la-dles of the east in relation to furnishing furnish-ing anti-Mormon literature? Benner X. Smith has withdrawn from tho race for United States District Dis-trict Attorney. Since Justice Bartch butted In, It has cheapened tho contest A so that Benners self respect compelled him to retire. v' & Tho Presbyterian church alows poly-gamlstic poly-gamlstic members of tho church In India and China to retnln their plural plur-al wives and maintain their standing in the church. Although Judge Bartch is a Presbyterian this does not dls- ' qualify him from being a candidate for District Attorney. A movement is on foot to reorganize tho Republican party. If tho reorganizes reor-ganizes are willing to "put up" the spondulex, they can reorganize in-stanter. in-stanter. tit The real estate nssociatlo'n Is preparing pre-paring for another graft on the publlo in the shape of an excursion to Saltah on Juno 28. It Is advertised that $5,000 will be given away, free gratis, for , nothing, in the form of prizes; prizes ,-v for doing nothing is a certainty. The value of tho alleged prizes might at a liberal computation amount to $50 fS and the association expects to "rako in" several thousands of dolars. A real estate association and an eleemo-i symnry association with a bunco flavor appear to bo synonymous terms. |
