Show TRUTH. 10 road property in the Gould system that was not unraercefully. pounded by the combined Vanderbilt interests. There is a reason for this. George Gould is having the fight of his life since it be-cai- ne known in financial circles that he was seeking an outlet to the Pacific coast. The Vanderbilts are bringing all their batteries to bear on the Gould railroads to depress the stocks and discourage the trust companies that have been requested to underwrite the new bond issues. As the light falls upon this situation it can easily he comprehended just why George Gould has been so. secretive in his 'movements. The conflict is one of stupendous magniand a tude. The spirit unity of interests that has been bo prevalent and bo successful as to be attributed to the influence of the God. of the universe, does not exist as between the two great. railroad combinations. It is practically a fight to a. finish for the transcontinental traffic. The Vanderbilts, through the superior ability of E, II. Ilarriman, have obtained control of --a wide section of the Oregon Short Line, the Oregon Railway & Navigation company, the Southern Pacific and. the Central Pacific. They control absolutely the action of the Santa Fe, so that line is removed from auy separate consideration in the railroad problem. It does not take a phitosopber to see that the Goulds must either find an outlet to the Pacific coast or forever pay a merciless tribute into the Vanderbilt cofThis very fact lias' kept. the fers. stocks of the Gould lines down to a beggarly basis, while the Vanderbilt holdings were sailing sky ward. Those who doubt this self evident fact may compare the price of'stocks'Rsthey'are listed ou the New York, exchange. Find Missouri Pacific,- Texas Pacific or any of the allied Gould properties, and; compare stock quotations with ga those of the.New. York Central, Northwestern,. Michigan Cenr Southern, Union Pacific Michigan tral, or Southern. Pacific. By this comparison the whole problem is. solved. By-this- - - s-- It - - B v t - would seem, to be necessary to confirm the. apparent der termination of George Gould to reach the Pacific coast. lie must' do this to preserve the integrity, of. liis great railroad properties. As the surveyed y from Denver to Salt Lake is 500 miles in length, the sum of $23,- 000,000 would give $46,000 to the; mile for construction. While, there, is some expensive grading to h done at certain points along the proposed right-of-waan. average, of $46,000, per- mile is a liberal allowance, for building the entire line. It is a well established' rule among railroad corporations to first attempt tlie bullying process, in subduing a rival. If that fails, the potent power of money can always be relied upon. Dave if .would, then repeat itself, Moffat should want. to become a United States senator and suddenly, discover that if lie .kept on trying to build a railroad for ' George Gould he never could get to the senate. If he stopped DuildiDg and buncoed Gould; to a frosty; frazzle, his chances for becoming senator wpuld greatly increase. In- fact, his election might depend on deceiving Gould-as-d heading off' the. railroad enterprise.;; If Banker Moffat should finally ditch the- whole project, Salt the line, to.Denver. Lake would not-gehas not.shown much desire to become a. United Slates senator, and the road may be finished all right. There. is. this in Us favor. The money for, construction has been secured and George;' Gould has. grown wiser by reason of his. experience. 1 ' ' B B Something entirely new. has- developed within- the past few. days; which serves to further complicate the game on the railroad chessboard. The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad company, at its annual meeting, authorized a bond issne-o$35,000,000. As. the road. has. been in good condition for many years, it is now a puzzle for the extraordinary issue of bonds. Occasional suggestions have been.made that, the road stands, in splendid isolation so far as the great systems are concerned. In the. natural order of things it has been thought that the road, could not lpng continne prosperous unless it formed an alliance with one of tpe larger combinations. It now begins to look as though the inevitable was about to occur, and that the St. Paul had decided to link its destinies with the Gould railroads. The St. Paul traverses acouDtry where it competes at every turn with the Chicago & Northwestern and the ChiSt. Paul, Minneapolis & cago Omaha. Both of these roads belong to the Vanderbilt- system. When President James J. llilTwas forming the Northern Securities company by combining the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific, he tried, to absorb the SL Paul. In this he was foiled, and finally took in the Burlington. This left the St. Paul high and dry so far as western connection .was. concerned. It is well known among financiers, that a deal has been the Gould' lines and the St.Paul road for a closer traffic relation,' It strongly, Buspected that the St. Paul has been, forced to authorize-bond, issue of $25,000,000 in order to form an alliance with the Gould system. The terms of this alliance probably contemplate the extension of the St. Paul to some-poi- nt where a connection can be made wjtli the main transcontinental Gould line. It is not outside the raDge that the SL Paul may seek a connection at Denver, thos strengthening the plan of Gould to reach out into the Vanderbilt territory that lies north of Omaha and west of Chicago. This strategic move would give the Gould system ap advantage, that the Vaqdec-bilt- s could scarcely overcome. , lovable little fellow, 10 years He contracted scarlet fever and after a few days illness was taken away.
