EVERY ONE in Utah will sympathize with George Sutherland and Mrs. Sutherland, because of the early death of their only son, Philip Emerson Sutherland, which took place at Concord, N. H., on Tuesday night. Typhoid fever was the cause of the untimely end. The information that the young man was critically ill was received by the parents several days ago, and they were enabled to reach his bedside in time to see him pass away. The remains will be brought to Utah for interment p.nd the funeral services will be conducted at St. Marks cathedral tomorrow by Very Rev. James B. Eddie, dean. Philip Sutherland, was only 17 years of age. He was a youth of remarkable promise, well advanced in his studies, and would have soon entered Harvard college. He was an only son, but two sisters mourn with their parents his loss. It is sad to see the young cut down, for it seems as if Infinity never intended such to be the case. That man, like the tree of the forest, was created to die of old age. But there are often, too often, instances where the law of Natures is violated through agencies ; Guide we do not seem to have power which to control, and when such violations occur, hearts bleeed and men and women mourn. We can stand at the graves of the aged and wornout without shedding tears, for we know that hfe for them had no longer charms; that for years they have been looking toward the land of rest beyond the golden sunset, but when we hear the clods falling on the coffin that encases a form which fell in its youthful beauty and promise we weep bitterly. We reproach ourselves with our failure to understand why, among all the unworthy ones which remain, this one so full of promise for the future should not have been spared, and we grope in the darknes for a solution of the problem. There comes a time, however, when in our caliper moments we imagine that the passing of loved ones is but a part of the plan of the Almighty to bring us closer to Himself. That because sometimes our eyes have not been as constantly directed toward the beyond as He would have them, He directs that a loved one be brought to Him there to live, a constant attraction for those left behind. That as tbe years come and go, the thought of a meeting in a better land will be an incentive to a more determined struggle to so live that circles of loved ones cannot fail of being reunited. That when after long weary days of patient, sorrowful waiting, when the kindly summons comes at last, through the mists which veil the shadowy clime from mortal vision will ccme tlie voice of the dear one of former times; out of the dark clouds will appear the bright faces of the darlings of our hearts. And if this be true, and let us hope it is, then is It not best after all? For what is earthly, success but fleeting vanity, oily rewarded by "storied urn and a line of history, a animated bust; paragraph of laudation, a few dollars, all of which fade into insignificance when compared with the grandeur of glory and eternal happiness beyond the borders of space where bright planets roll on and on and on forever and forever. In common with all, Truth extends the hand of sympathy to the stricken ones in this their dark hour. Let the tears fall as they will, for that is but right; is but the expression of maternal, paternal and sisterly affection. But when all is over, in the solitude, let the heart cry out in its grief to the One who rules all things; who directs worlds in their courses; who manages the affairs of the universe and who loves all His created beings, and by and by a peace which will pass human understanding will creep In and nestling in the wounded breast, will prove a balm and a consolation. For the boy who has left, there is no more care; no more trial; no more suffering. With all the great hosts who have marched from the cradle to the sepulchre he lives, waiting for those he loved to come after. His will be the hand stretched out in greetng some day; his the cheering voice bidding welcome to the brightness of the place prepared for us. MENS FURNISHING DEPARTMENT GOLF GOODS. Cpnby Co.
