Show TRUTH. 12 ' MINING NOTES. Nearly everyone in this city remembers the excitement which prevailed here during the winter of 1894, over the discovery of rich gold hearing rock, near the mouth of Little Cottonwood canyon. The first discovery was of float of great value and later the vein from which it came was uncovered, in what was known as the New State mine, the property of W. J. and others. As soon as this fact became known Jim Hamm, and a lot of other real estate speculators, laid out a townsite and began selling building lots and doing all those acts which boomers generally But do under similar circumstances. it was not long ere confidence in the new El Dorado was lost and, save for a little work on the New State property, activity inthat vicinity ceased. Among those who believed in the continuity and permanence of the ore deposits was Nich Schmittroth, formerly of Omaha, and a number of associates. He formed a company and went to work to develop, what has since become known as the Jefferson group. Later, as the work showed permanence of deposit of mineral, a . lease and bond on the New State was secured. The Yellow Jacket properties on the north were also leased. But the company did not have suf- Wol-estenhol- A Delightful Place to Visit A Profitable Place to Live ficient funds with which to prosecute its labors. So recently a new corporation has been organized under the laws of the state of Nebraska, with ofllces at Omaha. Jacob Kopp, a brother of Michael Kopp, of this city, is president, while Schmittroth is vice president and general manager. The New State has been bought outright and a lease and bond on the Yellow Jacket secured and work is progressing finely. Recently an electric drill has been installed and is now pounding its way into the main tunnel, which is in 520 feet and win cut the vein at a deptn. of about 700 feet in the next thirty feet. At present this drill is worked by electricity generated by a gasoline engine, hut within the next few days the water power plant at the mouth of the canyon will be completed and power will be supplied from that place, the distance to be covered by wire being only 4,200 feet. The New State has been developed to a point where the permanency of the vein has been thoroughly demonstrated and nothing more will he done there until after the main vein has been encountered, when attention to that portion of the companys holdThe Yellow ings will he given. of especial to be is Jacket group going not as value. It is high grade as the others, hut the ore exists in greater bodies and it constitutes one of the best parts of the property. A tunnel has been driven into the hill to cut the vein, which shows good values. ounces Ore running five and one-haounces two in gold, a little more than 7 in silver and nearly per cent copper has been shipped irom the New State, but this was selected ore. Two carcads were shipped and thus was the company enabled at one time before the reorganization, to prosecute work. But while these high values were obtained from sorting, the general run of the rock is especially eood. The pay streak itself runs from six to eighteen inches and the very richest ore has been found where the vein was widest. The ore in the Jefferson is of a similar nature. New company houses, a boarding house and hunk house, a blacksmith shop and machine shop have been erected and everything is in first-clashape. That the mine will some day in the very near future he added to the list of dividend payers seems almost certain. The corporation is offering no stock for sale here and when the main deposit is cut it is very likely that no more will be placed on the market. Nebraska people seem to be very fortunate here. Dern and Heimrich were two Fremont farmers, hut they made Mercur worth millions, after Utah capitalists had fought shy of it. lf .
