Show Our Senatorial Representatives The appointment by President Roosevelt and the speedy and unanl-mous unanl-mous confirmation by the United States senate of William Spry as United States marshal for Utah was a stunning blow to that element In Salt Lake City which, while acting on the most un-American principle Imaginable, Imagin-able, calls Itself the American party. The "American" party, as is well known, originated and Is kept alive by the desire of ex-Senator Kearns to glut his thirst for vengeance on the people of Utah generally and the Mormon peo-, peo-, pie and the Mormon church In par- tlcular, for no other reason In heaven, earth or hell than that the Mormon church refused to get Into politics and cause the re-election of Mr. Kearns to the United Slates senate. In furtherance further-ance of his plan for revenge Mr. Kearns was able lo buy willing tools and to dupe many honest people Into espousing his cause. Mr. Kearns forgot, If he ever knew, that In the BIblo It Is written, "Vengeance "Ven-geance Is mine, I will repay, salth the I Lord." Or It may have been that Mr. , Kearns was fearful that the Lord would not exercise vengeance on any t Individual or any people for not doing such an unrighteous thing as mnking him a senator of tho United States and therefore took It upon himself to usurp the prerogative of tho Lord. However that may be the attacks which have been made upon all people who would not bow down and servo Mr. Kearns have been violent, persistent and de spicable. Few who would not bo his slaves escaped his wrath. Ho it is who originated and made It possible I for the fight against Utah, her ma- J terlal Interest and good name to have attained the proportions it has. He It i Js who has harrassed and embarrassed Senator Smoot and caused this stato to be humiliated by slanders and false- I hoods of the most diabolical kind, for ho supplied the sinews of war which enabled his tools to go up and down in the earth and spread their pernicious and utterly false reports about this stato and her people. The fight on Senator Smoot has been waged with the utmost bitterness and tho bitterness bitter-ness has extended to all those who would not bow down to Mr. Kearns. Elated with the little victory which Mr. Kearns and his "American" party accidentally achieved In the municipal election in this city last November the "American" party people Influenced only by the little things they see around them assumed that their success suc-cess meant tho overthrow of Senator Smoot, that he would certainly certain-ly be expelled from the United States senate and that no person who belonged be-longed to the Mormon church would be permitted to hold any federal office. Tho appointment of Mr. Spry and his speedy confirmation has to some extent ex-tent undeceived some of tho members of tho so-called "American" party. It has dawned upon them that tho president presi-dent of tho United States and the members of tho United States senate are bigger and broader men than they supposed; also that tho little storm In a tea kettle which they raised hero has not had forco enough to reach very far beyond tho limits of the municipality of Salt Lake. Another thing which was well known to the organ of Mr. Kearns and a fow of his chief minions, but which they attempted at-tempted to conceal from the public has been demonstrated, that Is that Senators Smoot and Sutherland have as much Influence In Utah affairs with tho president of the United States and the members of the United States senate as the representatives from oth" er states have In affairs talnlng to their states. The "AmerL..n" party organ has attempted to make It ap pear that Utah's representatives at Washington nre non-entities, discredited discred-ited at the capital. All the facts show conclusively that the very reverse is the case. Senator Sutherland has the confidence of President Itoosovolt an 1 the members of tho senate as fully and as Implicitly as tho senators froir any stato nnd much more so than a great many who sit In tho senate. The same Is true regarding Senator Smoot. They are both recognize! ar men of high character, good motives and absolutely without any Intention to deceive or mislead, also as men of ability, much nbove that of tho average aver-age senator and men who always and under all circumstances champion th? Interests of tho whole people of the state they represent. These facts, notwithstanding the Tribune's misrepresentations are be coming known and recognized by the people of Utah. That Senator Smoot will bo ousted from th9 senate Is now looked upon as a very remote possibility. pos-sibility. The Idea that Senator Burrows Bur-rows Is a great power is fading away and his latest move to hear more testimony tes-timony against Senator Smoot with tho view of proving that Smoot In particular ,and the whole Mormon people peo-ple In general nre rebels and up in arms against the government, Is con slderel a lot- of Tom foolery. |
