Show III J THE POLITICAL ARENA. ITho Republican city committees met on Monday last and llxed the date of holding tho primaries for Wednesday, September 27 at 8 p. m.; tho precinct conventions for tho nomination of councilmon on Friday, September 21) at 8 p. m., and tho city convention on Monday, October 2, commencing at 9:30 a. m. Tho vacant place on the committee was filled by tho unanl-mcus unanl-mcus election of E. J. Eardley, of the Second precinct. A. S. Reiser was jot a candidate for tho place. The apportionment, ap-portionment, after considerable discussion, dis-cussion, was fixed on tho vote for 'Ezra- Thompson four years ago. This I was considered tho most equitable I basis, although tho members of the committee with "American" proclivi ties wanted tho Knox voto two years ago. There are several men on tho committee- who aro said to really belong be-long to Iho "American" party and objections ob-jections havo been mado by Republicans Republi-cans to their being allowed tj retain placo3 on tho committee and participate partici-pate in tho councils of tho 'Republican 'Republi-can party. I The Democrats aro vory actlvo for so early in tho campaign. Tho office holders aro using their prestige and Influence in many ways. Tho Young Men's Democratic club, which has been closed slnco last fall is opened again and tho elegantly fur- nished rooms will soon bo a scene of 'fl life and bustle. Tho convon- tlon will probably bo hold about Sep tember 28, a. few days earlier than tho Republicans havo fixed for theirs. Septcmbr,. 25 ifc mentioned as tho dnto of tho primaries. Tho manager of tho Trlbuno, who 13 also United States district attorney, recently mado a visit to Washington, D. C, in rcsponso to a rather urgent lnvltatlo' to explain to tho government govern-ment tho nttltudo of himself and his . , paper In opposing tho Republican party in this stato during tho olcctlon last autumn and ovor since. Tho president, it is understood, was fully Informed of the rourso of tho Trlbuno In It3 efforts to defeat tho Republican ticket and also of its attacks upon j Pros. Roosevelt himself nnd other Re-, Re-, publicans holding high positions, in-, in-, chullirg tlio" ' 'dastardly and utterly false and scandalous articles regarding regard-ing Governor Richards and his conduct con-duct In regard to tho opening of tho Uintah reservation. Tho government doe3 not approve of those holding positions po-sitions of trust, honor and emolument like tho United States district attorney attor-ney turning traitors to tho party which gave them offlco and Mr. LIpp-man LIpp-man was required to show cause why he should not bo removed. This Is tho second time within tho past six months that tho district attorney has had to plead that ho bo allowed to servo out tho remainder of tho four year term to which ho was appointed. On this occasion Mr. Lippman endeavored en-deavored to persuade tho president that ho was a truo bltio Republican, and that his paper was Republican in all tilings except whoro Mormons aro concerned. Ho promised to bo good in futuro and said that tho Trlbuno would support tho Republican ticket In tho municipal election in Salt Lako this fall. Just what effect his plead' Ings and representations had Is -not known. Ono thing, however, Is evl dent, that is that if Mr. Lippman makes good with regard to tho Trlbuno Trlb-uno supporting tho Republican municipal mu-nicipal ticket tho great "American" party will find that it has for tho second sec-ond timo been sold by tho Trlbuno' and that It Is left without an organ. That tho support of tho Trlbuno would ho of benefit to tho Republican party is vory doubtful. Tho paper and tho triumvirate which directs its destinies Is in such bad odor with tho peoplo hero generally that It Is be-lloved be-lloved that Its support would bo more of a detriment than an ndvantago to any decent political party. Mr. Llpp-man's Llpp-man's Interview with tho powers at Washington may cause a chango In tho tactic3 of tho "American" party with regard to tho Republicans here. It has been intimated that Mr. Lippman Lipp-man nnd his gang will nttompt to dominato tho Republican convention and forco tho nomination of such candidates can-didates as would bo pleasing to them; in fact that tho plan pursued by them in tho convention two years ago will bo repeated. It Is, howovcr, hardly likely that tho same tricks can bo carried car-ried through a second time. If they snould succeed it would, of courso, bo , - -rSL water on tho Democratic wheel and would mean tho almost certain election elec-tion of tho Democratic ticket. Color Is given to tho supposition that tho "Americans" havo designs on the Republican convention from the fact that "Americans" who also call themselves Republicans mado a big fight to havo tho apportionment of delegates to tho Republican convention conven-tion fixed on tho basis of tho vote cact for Frank Knox at tho municipal election two years ago. If that plan had been adopted it would have given tho "American" Republicans n big advantage and enabled thorn to get more delegates favorable to them Into tho convention than thoy can possibly do with tho;- apportionment fixed as it was on tho voto for Ezra Thompson four years past. The com-mitteo com-mitteo was on to tho gamo of tho "Americans" and spoiled It. It is said that if tho Republican party nominates a Gcntllo for mayor who Is not strongly antl-Kearns, tho "American" party wIH adopt him as their candidate, and that tho "American" "Ameri-can" party will support Gontlle3 on either tho Republican or Democratic tickets and only put up candidates of their own when Mormons on each ticket happen to bo running against each other. This is tho "American" plan to disfranchise tho Mormons. . ... Ex-Senator Kearns, It is said, is propared to shell out liberally for tho "American" campaign. It Is reported ho has been writing checks nearly all tho timo slnco his return from his now homo In California. As a mayoralty candidate for tho Republicans, W. S. McCornlclc has held tho center of tho stngo for tho past week. Tho business Interests want a good, sound business man to tako hold of tho city's affairs and save what may bo loft of tho million dollars dol-lars water money when tho prcsont administration retires, henco tho prossuro which is being brought on Mr. McCornlck to accopt tho nomination. nomina-tion. v J Councilmnn Blade's early boom for mayor, which has been slumbering for somo time, is being ronowed. His friends aro again actlvo In his-behalf. Councilman. Hewlett has a strong and growing following" also. Thoy arguo that ho ia tho logical candidate, and thero is no doubt ho will havo strong t support In tho convontlon. Mr. How- jl lott will soon havo to dccldo whothor jil ho will run for mayor or again bo a candldato for tho city council. II & Jl H. M. Standlsh, a good Republican, 1 is mentioned as a desirable candidate "1 for tho city council from tho Fifth precinct. j jl Tho Ropubllcan frlonds of C. A. t Orlob aro pushing him to become a ' candldnto for tho city council from l tho Fourth. Mr. Orlob has not slgnl- jl fled his intentions in tho matter. 'I & Jit 'I J. J. Thomas will in all probability I bo ono of tho Republican nominees I for tho council from tho First pre- I clnct. Down in tho Second tho Ropubll- jl cans aro talking C. E. Davoy for a councilmnnlc candldato. For tho Republican nomination for I city treasurer, Fred Bassott is a can- I didnto and tho Democrats seem to be I centering on Stephen H. Lynch for that ofllcc. & J I For recorder tho Republicans aro I talking of Charles Cottroll, C. S. I Buckwalter, C. J. Barthol and J. J. I Moycrs. I Ezra Thompson says ho will not ac- I cept tho mayoralty nomination on tho I ''American" or any other ticket, but fl if ox-Senator Kearns should insist on fl Ezra making tho race it is believed I Ezra would comply. Tommy got him I Into lino onco or twico before, and H might do so again. H Councilman Neuhauscn will prob- H ably bo a candidate for re-olection to H tho city council. Ncuhauson Is ono H of tho few sensible, honest men In tho H council now. H Thoro has been a great deal of talk I to tho effect that tho Mormon church I authorities had decreed that tho Dem- H ocratic ticket would bo successful In H tho coming municipal election. It has H been said and repeated again and H again on tho street corners and else- H whoro that Mayor Morris and his ad- I ministration were entirely satisfac- fl tory to tho church people and thero- H foro thoy were to bo perpetuated in fl offlco. This Is tho kind of rubbish ,fl I that is put in circulation and many people hollovo it. It Is, however, tho veriest rot that It Is possiblo to Imagine, Imag-ine, and is ltopt circulating by peoplo whoso chief business is gossiping. Tho church authorities aro taking no hand In tho election for or ngalnst any individual or any party, and Truth will bo very much mistaken if they do. Tho Democrats will havo a fair flold as far as tho church is con-corned, con-corned, and nothing moro. Tho Republicans Re-publicans nnd all other parties will havo tho same, but tho Democrats will havo no advantago in that regard. Truth knows what it is talking about and wants to mako it omphatic. J J Whllo tho Democrats havo tho ad- vantage of being In offlco and controlling con-trolling tho employment of men in tho various departments of tho city government and of having a largo sum of money to spend, thoy havo a good many disadvantages to contend with. Tho first is that tho present administration has proved itself to bo most incompotont. Its water scheme is Btrongly tainted with venality and is such that it cannot bo approved by any man with ordinary common business busi-ness Judgment. I Tho second disadvantage is that It has broken, ignored in fact, overy an-tl-olectlon pledgo it made. Not ono of thoso who enabled it to win tho election elec-tion two years ago has received any recognition whatovor. Tho conso-quonco conso-quonco is that hundreds of peoplo aro, metaphorically speaking, carrying long knives for Mayor Morris and tho rest that wcro elected with them. Mayor Morris will havo tho saloon olemont, tho gamblors and tho sporting sport-ing peoplo generally with him, becauso ho has been their friend, but this friendship was at tho cxponso ot breaking tho pledges givefi to tho Gontilo church peoplo and tho decent members of tho community before tho election two years ago. It has boon a "wldo open" town slnco tho present administration camo into power. Last but not least it has been a terribly extravagant administration. It has spoilt monoy llko water, raised the taxes and will do so again if continued con-tinued in power. Tho Republicans aro getting Into fair shapo for tho campaign. Thoy aro going to nomlnato a good clean tlckqt, exorcising special caro with regard to tho councllmanlc nominations. nomina-tions. Tho aim will bo to put up mon who havo substantial interests in tho community and who will dovoto tho necessary timo to attend to their official of-ficial business. Two years ago tho Republicans beat tho "Amorlcans" by electing a Democratic administration; this year thoy say thoy will beat the "Americans" by electing tho Republican Republi-can ticket o |
