Show POLITICAL WISDOM The city administration is having a statement of the city's finances pre- I pared for the purpose of justifying, in the eyes of the public, the administration administra-tion in increasing the tax levy which will be done the last Monday In the month. In this statement It will bo shown that tho former administration was guilty of gross extravagance and dishonesty, which is a fact, and that because of that extravagance and dishonesty dis-honesty It is necessary, absolutely necessary nec-essary to raise taxes, tl will also be shown (?), intho statement, that the present administration has been honest, hon-est, prudent and economical, which is a falsehood with a big, big D, and that instead of tho treasury having been looted as It was and is being looted, by tho present crowd, tho looting was all done by their predecessors. Look out for that sinking fund to redeem re-deem bonds which will bo made a feature fea-ture of tho coming financial report. It's a little bit dlfllcult to seo tho real necessity for a sinking fund when thero Is nothing to sink. The city's treasury is not only empty but is represented rep-resented by a minus quantity of nearly ?100,000 and tho minus quantity will keep on increasing. Tho proposed sinking fund is a film flam scheme to servo as a justification for tho raise In taxes. Tho statutes, tho ordinances, etc., will bo quoted. We shall havo "platitudes in stained glass attitudes" by Davis, Black, Mulvoy, et al, and law quoted till wo can't rest, but it's all film flam. Tho man with tho muck rake is badly needed hero as well as in tho newspaper offices. Tho Telegram got hold of a city and county directory tho other day and copied tho names therein contained, making tho allegation that tho bearers bear-ers of tho said names were candidates for tho legislature on some old ticket J$. or another. ' Tho Socialists wero omit ted and havo a kick on that account, legitimate or otherwise. Bill appears to bo pushing Glas- k mann pretty hard for tho position of postmaster at Ogden, and according to latest Indications Bill's efforts bid fair to succeed. A few days ago several sev-eral papers, by Innuendo, mado It appear ap-pear that Bill had withdrawn his candidate can-didate and Glasmann scarcely know where ho was at, but later It developed devel-oped that tho papers had had pipe dreams on tho subject and their utterances ut-terances wero unreliable. Glasmann wants this postoffico business settled before tho next election. Tho settlement, settle-ment, of course, depends on Congressman Congress-man Howell. Bill, judging other people peo-ple by his own standard, Is afraid that Howell will string Glasmann along and without any quid pro quo, other than a doubtful promise, obtain the support for tho Republicans of Mr. Glasmann and his newspapers in tho coming election, then after election elec-tion Bill fears that Mr. Howell would turn down Glasmann cold. Neither Bill nor Glasmann purposo giving their Influence and tho Influence of their papers con amor. They i probably playing tho game of politics In tho right way, that is tho way to win, irrespective of tho methods. .S & In tho statement that was put before be-fore tho taxpayers when It was desired de-sired to induco them to voto for the issuance by tho municipality of Salt Lako of a million dollars in bonds tho various purposes to which the said sum of a million dollars was to bo applied ap-plied was set out with considerable minuteness. Among other things it was stated that a certain amount would bo expended for tho purposo or taking up small water pipes, thrco inches in diameter, and replacing thoso llttlo pipes with pipes six inches or more In diameter. Tho small pipes are not of sufficient capacity to carry enough water to supply tho residents of most of tho localities where thoso pipes exist. Tho change to pipe of a greater carrying capacity was, therefore, there-fore, very essential, but tho chango has not been mado except In a very few instances, and probably won't be, as tho money which should havo been devoted to that purpose has been placed elsewhere. Thoso peoplo who expected and had a right to expect that tho larger pipes would bo substituted sub-stituted for tho smaller ones are suffering suf-fering for water, and from present indications aro likely to contlnuo suffering suf-fering unless thoy take somo meas-udes meas-udes to force tho administration to fulfill tho pledges given. In a fow Instances the larger pipes have been put down, but tho connections, for somo unaccountable reasons, havo not been made. Meantime tho peoplo and tho foliage aro perishing because of lack of water. o |
