Show GAMBLING. Tho city administration started In with tho loudly proclaimed Intention of suppressing gambling and kindred evils which exist In this city. In that they havo the approval of all good citizens, citi-zens, provided they aro honest In their professions. Tho facts aro that tho ulmlnlstrntlon docs not caro a continental con-tinental whether gambling flourishes or not. It was a good political cry md that's why they took It up. Thoro Is no doubt that gambling under tho previous administration was allowed to run riot. It was a shame and a disgrace to any city. Tho new powers, pow-ers, as soon ns they came Into office, ordered all tho public gambling houses jlosed nnd they were closed, but It appears .that they aro permitting tho vlco to bo indulged In secretly. Tho authorities know of many gambling dons which have been opened slnco tho public gambling houses wero closed, yet only one has been molested mo-lested nnd that only after tho opposition oppo-sition press made an outcry about it. it Is an acknowledged fact that the gambling question is a hard ono to deal with. Tho most that can bo done is to curtail It and keep it within bounds. If tho present administration does that It Is as much ns can reasonably reason-ably bo expected. If ihoy do moro they will havo accomplished greater things than has ever been accomplished accom-plished In any city In tho country, but If they honestly nnd In good faith do tho best that can bo done, they should bo supported. Wo say give them a fair show, don't expect miracles. Walt and see If their Intentions and actions are honest and in good faith. If so help them out; of not, condemn them, but don't nag and captiously criticize becauso their party is not the party most of us wanted to seo placed in power. |
