These articles are scheduled to appear every (her week throughout (he year in an effort to better acquaint you with probOmi f health, and designed to improve the of the people of I'tah. Skin Eruptions Inflammatory skin eruptions are frequently seen as a result of con- tact with various plants. More than two hundred shrubs, trees, flowers, and weeds have been Identified as causative agents of contact dermatitis, but those most likely to produce eruptions are Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, Poison Primrose, Sumac, Chrysanthemum, Ragweed, and the Japanese Lacquer tree or its resinous products. Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, and Poison Sumac arc natives of North America and are found throughout most of the" United Canada. States and adjacent Poison Ivy is a leafy, branching shrub, but at times it grows like a vine over rocks, fences, walls, other plants, and in wooded areas may ascend the tree trunks. Characteristically, its leaves appear in groups of three and are dark d with green, smooth, few indentations and pointed tips. It produces a white, berry like fruit in clusters on aerial stems. Poison Oak is a bushy shrub of two varieties. In the Eastern and Southern United States, it grows from one to two feet high, but in the Western United States and especially California, it may reach a height from six to nine feet. Its leaves also occur in clusters of three, the Western variety being rounded with three to seven lobes while the Eastern and Southern variety shows more resemblance to true oak leaves with conspicuously indented margins and five to seven lobes. It also produces a white berry. Poison Sumac, also known as poison ash, poison elder and poison dogwood, grows in swampy areas and although a shrub, it occasionally reaches a height of twenty-fiv- e feet Its leaves are long and with pointed tips and occur in groups of seven to thirteen. Its white berries develop on separate aerial branches In clusters. oval-shape- -- oval-ahap- Susceptibility to these poison oils plants vary with each individual. Perhaps everyone is immune until after one or more exposures, but following contact, apto 75 develop proximately 65 a state of hypersensitivity or allergy to chemicals (Polyhydric 1 in the leaves, phenols) ' stems, frua nd sap. Some persons remain entirely immune while others are extremely sensitive and react violently to the slightest contact Such persons may develop inflammatory skin eruptions just by walking near the poisonous shrubs. In some ina gradual stances, immunity seems to be established by continued exposures. Hyposensitization is sometimes accomplished by repeated subcutaneous innocula-tioof the plant extracts or by oral dosages of plant extracts. In susceptible persons, exposure to poison ivy or oak usually is followed by a skin rash within hours or a day or two. Initially, the skin is red, swollen and studded with small blisters. Itching and burning may be intense. Blisters of various sizes develop and when they rupture, a red, weeping surface is exposed. Scratching and rubbing may spread the irritating chemicals on other surfaces of the body and contaminated clothing coming in contact with uninvolved skin produces new patches of dermatitis. The dermatitis produced by these plants usually subsides in mild cases in the course of several days to a week. In the more pronounced cases, it may last for several weeks and if secondary infection occurs may be very obstinate. Treatment includes first of all avoidance of the noxious weeds. Everyone should become acquainted with the poisonous shrubs. If one has been exposed to the plants, all contaminated clothing should be thoroughly washed or dry cleaned and the shoes scrubbed with strong soap and water and shined. The skin should be bathed thoroughly with several latherings of good soap and then sponged with alcohol. Wet dressings of weak alkaline solution, such as one teaspoonful of baking soda to a quart of water, is usually soothing. Large blisters should be punctured and drained. Antiseptic ointments or lotions should be used to prevent infection. In any severe case, the patient should see an M.D. physician. ns pre-seaso- The Cubs were able to punch over a touchdown in the final period to defeat the Bears Bob Moses, Cub quarterback, set up the winning tally with a 23 yard pass to end Ted Jordan. South Cache has played one league game against the North Cache Bulldogs last Friday with the game ending at a tie. The Spartahs this year have a fairly unexperienced team, boasting only five lettermen from the 1952 squad. Coach Maughan states that he will run. from the Notre Dame box. Although the Spartans lost heavily because of graduation Ihey still have boys around to cause lots of trouble. Meanwhile at the Bear River camp Coach Linford has prac-- , tice sessions going full steam ahead. This year the Bears-ar- e using a variety of forma- the single! tions, including wing and the T.
