Show field St Stream reane 55 by VERNON B SHIELDS want to mil kill stansbury ansbury Si does V S FOREST SERVICE TO RE COMMEND 1000 DOE KILL ON THE STANSBURY RANGE when utah s board of big game control meets in the state capitol building on friday july 11 1947 the U S forest service will rec ammend that 1000 doe deer be re moved from the stansbury range they will also recommend that the entire district be open for deer hunting no closed areas I 1 spent nearly two hours mo mon day afternoon in the office of mr F C koziol supervisor of the was atch national forest discussing our deer problem mr koziol ad me that the range is in very poor cond tion do to over grazing by deer not cattle regardless of the fact that deer hunting was very poor in this area last year the forest service maintains and has data to prove that there is more deer there than the range can support he was unable to give me an opinion as to where the deer were last season and why so few deer were seen during the various surveys he claims the deer are there somewhere because the range shows undisputable evi dence of over grazing he ile also ad me that the recommend a tion of tooele thoele county s board of big game control had been reject ed as far as they were concerned our board boards s recommendation was that only three or four hundred doe permits be issued I 1 for your information the follow ing are members of tooele thoele coun ty s big game board bill edwards chairman ferns Ferri haynes secretary ralph jensen forest service char les mcconnell forest service ren walters utah sportsmen s assoria tion glen bennion cattleman rep resenting government area mil ton sagers cattleman bernard castino cattleman roy gerrard fish and game department cal vm vin olson cattleman vernon dist net both the utah sportsmen s As and the wild life federa tion opposed any doe kill mr gar rard county game warden was also opposed to the killing lulling of any doe in this area while in salt lake city I 1 also met with mr ross leonard dir ector fish and game department and mike gafin who is in charge of big game management for the state mr leonard and mr gafin differed in their opinions as to what should be done mr leonard expressed himself as not being in favor of the doe kill mr gafin on the other hand stated that he thought it was advise able to re move three or four hundred doe my opinion is that the board of big game control will act favor ably on the recommendations of the U S forest service if the sportsmen in this county intend to block this slaughter of doe they had better attend the meeting at the capitol on july 11 armed with facts and figures on the number of deer and the condition of the range they must be able to prove that the range is not in sf as serious a condition as the forest service maintains if the sportsmen are un able to do this they will most tamly lose their fight against the removal of dop this season two dollars for A duck stamp A bill has been introduced in congress to raise the duck stamp from one dollar to two dollars the idea of fhe the bill is to take up in slack and to help pro vide adequate funds for the sue management of our water fowl population there are ments both for and against this in crease it would be well for gur our sportsmen s or organizations to ad vise our congressional re presenta tives as to whether they are in dav or of the bill it is H R bill num ber 2617 game law violations mr floyd skelton and clifford garber were arrested by roy gar car rard county game warden for fi fishing hing on closed waters at vernon creek they were fined dollars a piece mgt L B perley dugway was arrested and fined twenty five dol SALT LAKE CITY june 25 be alive on the fifth that was the utah safety coun cil ell s advice today to holiday utahna hundreds of persons will start out to celebrate the fourth of july this year and wont won t come back the council said if the holiday acci dent death toll runs true to form the national safety council ad vises that more than accidental deaths were reported immediately after the memorial day dolid holiday ay the council fears the fourth ot july holiday also a three day weekend may be even more tragic unless the nation resolves to celebrate with more caution traffic accidents will lead the holiday parade of accidents the council said with drowning the next most important hazard fireworks over exertion and over exposure to sun also will take a toll four rules for the fourth were offered by the council to avoid accidents 1 dont don t use fireworks attend public displays 2 take it easy on the road start that fop a half hour earlier than necessary dont speed or take chances in passing 3 don dont t overdo in exercise eating or exposure to sun 4 if you swim dont don t go in alone wait at least an hour after eating know the depth of the water and dont indulge in horseplay |
