Show T in the bush lea beaque ue by W D BUSH J 1 11 1111 I 1 all II 11 tooele thoele basketball fans and coach johnsen are breathing easier after that terrific game at judge last friday it s interesting to note how one team though heavily dav ored can be beaten or badly scar ed by the underdog when the game is played in the home court of the in the case of 0 f judge we can see why the gym is so little it is said several people walked in and hung up their coats think ing it was a closet until they not iced the referees there the bas bets hung so low that billy grif aith had to duck to keep from bumping his head on the iron rims they say two rafters w were ere removed to accommodate glen rupp but I 1 even then he kept hitting his head on the lights tooele thoele was definitely at a dis advantage two steps either way from the center line and long leg ged boys like bones hamilton lor en dunn and gordon bunn were out of bounds every time the ball was thrown up for a ump jump it hit the ceiling honestly it was hard to tell who was playing and who was watching the bleachers were so close to the playing floor the shortage of seats was ariti cal I 1 walked in and demanded a place e to sit and watch the game no soap said the man at the door well says I 1 you don dont t under stand you see I 1 have a box seat well he replied just keep your overcoat pulled down in back bub and no one will notice it so much for the game at judge this is national boy scout week in salt lake last week a confab was held at which several local shouters were present willard pet erson A E smith and sheldon gray were among those who at tended from tooele thoele frank beck with sr of delta was also there and of course that grandest old scout of them all george albert smith scouting is not something that is to be regarded as a burden to the parents of a scout when a boy goes into scouting and attends his meetings regularly the mother and father of that boy might as well cease worrying for that fel low is in good hands and good company A scout learns to do all things his dad chasn t time to teach him and a few other things be sides boys who have merit badges in fir first staid aid know what they are doing when called upon to help out with someone who is injured A scout learns swimming A scout learns mechanics and carpentry bookkeeping chemistry woodwork boating farm and home repairs and a long list of other self improving skills all dads are proud of their scout sons they re proud to see them wearing the uniform of the boy scouts of A menca merica and to be present when the various awards and advancements are made to them what other traits could be desired in a boy than those in the scout law A scout is trustworthy loyal helpful friendly courteous land obedient cheerful thrifty brave clean cle and reverent that s about all I 1 I 1 learned during my short few months in the boy scouts but if every boy learns those laws and tries diligently to live up to them his success in life can be assured look at our scout leaders if you want to see some successful men maybe they aren t sitting on top of the world financially perhaps they dan don t have all the luxuries and fineries some of the big business men are accustomed to but who can deny they have admiration of the boys they work with and the i respect of those around them I 1 folks if your boy is not a scout by all means give him a chance to be one the associations he makes and the lessons he leams learns in scouting will remain with him long after he has outgrown his khaki or blue suit if your boy does not seem interested at least sug gest to him that he attend a few of the scout meetings being held i locally throughout the week then it if he feels that he d like to con dinue give him the encouragement you can to join up with the rest of the kids I 1 saw a boy who had been corn com ing to meetings regularly and had every intention of joining the scouts when the scoutmaster came to register him and found out the lad was only 11 and not eligible to join for another year that youngster broke right out and bawled that s how much some boys want to be scouts so lets let s not d deny eny them along with the scout week I 1 might mention that a fine new program has been worked out for TOD park originally there were tol several groups that wanted to sponsor the boy scouts there A meeting was held to reach so some om le sort of agreement on when to hold scout meetings and how the troops were to be organized and when ahen it was all over a good workable tern tem had been devised now the TOD park branch MIA will sponsor the scout troop and all units have been consolidated into one large group and will be supervised by the leaders who bave been working with the scouts out there regard less of what faith they may be all parents of these boys are wel come at TOD park MIA meetings which are held each tuesday night at 8 00 p in the advantage of this scheme is that instead of a few separate groups attempting to get along with just a few scouts there will be one big troop with good attendance and skilled leader ship boys of every religion are wel come and many different faiths are now represented the idea is not to convert them over to the mormon church but to convert all boys to scouting and at the same time teach them re verance which is one of the scout laws it its s a good program and meet mg ing with success the people of TOD park can be proud of start mg ing such an arrangement and remember today s sons are tomorrow s fathers A is adaa A 4 |
