A research center at Mesa Verde National Park that houses a priceless collection of more 2 million Native American artifacts will soon be getting some upgrades, thanks to a grant through the Save Americas Treasures Program. The $356,000 matching grant will be used to improve temperature control, insulation and storage for the artifacts, including some dating back as far as A D. 400. The grant cannot be spent until park officials prove the money will be matched, according to Will Morris, chief of interpretation for the National Park Service. The park is using $180,000 of its own funding to begin the renovations until the funds can be raised. The project is expected to take two years to complete. The research center, which is not open to the public, was built in 1958 as a temporary archeological field laboratory It does not meet the legal requirements for maintaining a federal museum collection. The walls lack insulation and some of the artifacts are stacked on top of each other. Lack of temperature control means organic materials shrink causing them to deteriorate faster. Much of the collection, however, is in fairly good storage conditions. The center, which was untouched by the wildfires during the summer of 2000, is hidden among yucca plants, juniper shrubs and pinon pines. The exact location is kept secret as o o o o o o of jjiHiua.ru a security precaution. Park officials are hoping to build a new cultural center in 2006 to coincide with the anniversary of Mesd Verde National Park. The cultural center will be used for curation, research, education, exhibits and office space. The estimated price tag is between $20 million and $40 million. 100-ye- ar ATTEND THE CHURCH OF YOUR CHOICE Church of God of Prophesy 606 Mill Creek Dr. 9 Steve Stewart 259-851- C Moab Christian Center Two miles south of Moab, Hwy 191 Worship 10 30 a m. - 6 p m. I had fun going to the stores to get my card stamped," said Brooklyn, a second-grade- r at Red Rock "And it was even Elementary. more fun when I won. To be eligible for the drawing, participants had to visit each of 27 participating businesses and get their Christmas Pass- port stamped. Passports were mailed to area residents inside a packet of coupons around Thanksgiving, and had a Dec. 10 deadline. On Dec. 11, chamber administrator Randy Martin conducted the drawing during the chambers weekly luncheon. The drawing was performed by one of the Chamber of Commerces Citizens of the Year, Penny Tanner. Later that afternoon, Martin and Tanner, along with Lauren Davis and Saina, presented the prize to Brooklyn at the Grand County Courthouse. Brooklyn was doubly excited because shed just been told at the end of school that she was among the Red Rock students selected to attend an Olympic hockey game in Provo in February. I also got an invitation to my friend's stores. She went twice last week on a weekday night and again for about an hour and a half on Saturday. Brooklyn was accompanied by her parents, Jeff and Penny Richards, and her younger sisters River and London. We made it a family activity, and had fun getting gift ideas at all the different stores," said Jeff, adding that each person in the family had a card except for the baby. No purchase was necessary to receive a stamp, and the money for the Moab Bucks came from the amount collected from each participating business. Martin thanked the busi- - . ness community for their support of the program, which was designed to attract more local people into Moab stores to do their holiday shopping.
