Show Services held Monday for Carroll J. Meador Funeral services for Carroll J. Meador, 81, longtime prominent Moab civic leader and businessman, business-man, were held Monday, April 17, in the Moab LDS Stake Center. Born April 9, 1897, in Eureka Springs, Ark., to William Jasper and Helen Carroll Meador, he died suddenly while working in his garden on April 14, 1978. The Meador family came to Moab in 1906, when Carroll was 9 years old, and his father was in the mercantile ' business here. He graduated from Grand County High School, and in the spring of 1916 he joined the U. S. Army. He was assigned to duty on the Mexican border, and was later appointed to Officer's Training School in Oglethorpe, Ga. However, he left there before being commissioned in order to go to France with his original company, as a non-commissioned officer. He served 2 years during the war, and 2 years with the army of occupation after the war ended. When he came out of the service he joined the Forest Service and was assigned to the Monticello Ranger District, in charge of the Blue Mountain and the La Sal ranges. It was in Monticello that he met his wife, Gwyn Bronson. They were married June 14, 1922. He established a real estate and insurance brokerage in Moab, a business he operated from 1927 until his death. He was also involved in the cattle business, and spent a great deal of time on the mountain and open range, both tending livestock, and hunting and fishing. He served in various capacities in Moab City administration for many years, and was a charter member of the American Legion Post 54 and the Moab Lions Club, where he also held many offices. He was appointed to one term as State Representative in the Utah Legislature, Legisla-ture, and in 1937 and 1943 he ran and was elected to this office. He joined the LDS Church in 1961 and was a high priest at the time of his passing. He had formerly been a member of the Elks Lodge and a 32nd degree mason. Survivors include his wife, 2 sons, Carroll Jr. Meador and Bill Bronson Meador, Moab; a daughter, daugh-ter, Mrs. Robert J. (Donna) Reid, Salt Lake City; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Gertrude Wheeler, Paradixe, Ca., and Beatrice Gilkey, Chico, Ca.; and a brother, L. N. "Tony" Meador, Paradise, Ca. Interment was in Grand Valley Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 54. Burial was under the direction of Grand Valley Mortuary. t . t '' ' ' , .' 4 . I X Carroll J. Meador |
