Show early settler of valley 87 years of age dies at ogden of pneumonia funeral held yesterday henry holyoak 87 years of age one of most respected pioneer citizens died at ogden saturday following an attack of pneumonia mr holyoak went to ogden two weeks ago to receive optical attention he underwent an operation for the removal of a cataract from one of his eyes and pneumonia developed A son A D holyoak was summoned from moab and reached ogden a short time before his fathers deach the body was brought back to moab for interment arriving tuesday evening funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the ward meeting house henry holyoak was bom at west er shire england on march 5 1839 the son of george and sarah holyoak he and family were among the first citizens of england to join the mormon church and in 1854 they left that country for america arriving in new orleans on may 1 they left immediately on the long journey across the plains to utah on the trip mr holyoake Holy oaks mother and his two sisters died he arrived in salt lake in september 1854 he had a small load of merchandise and 25 cents in his pocket when he rei ched salt lake mr holyoak did a real mans work in the early days of settlement in 1863 he made a trip cist with an ox team and th next year made a second trip east for freight there was always a great deal of danger connected with these freighting expeditions as the indians were none too friendly on january 29 1865 mr holyoak was married at Parag oonah iron county to miss sarah ann robinson his worldly goods at that time amounting to 5 cash lie made another trip east in 1866 and purchased a load of freight paying 50 cents a yard for calico 50 cents a pound for sugar 6 per hundred for flour and 50 each for small cook stoe tha prices of all other necessities of life were in like proportion mr holyoak and family moved to san juan county in 1880 with the early bluff pioneers and four years acter they came to moab mr holy cak settled on one of the best farms in moab valley residing there until his death mr and mrs holyoak were the parents of seven children five of whom survive mrs holyoak died about four years ago mr holyoak for seventy years has been a zealous member of the L D S church after locating in moab he served on two missions for his church in england going there in 1893 and 1895 in spite of his age mr holyoak has been in good health until recently when his eyes commenced to give him trouble it was in the hope anat he could secure relief for his acs that he went to ogden where he contracted pneumonia which resulted fatally mr holyoak is survived by two sons and three daughters who are mrs J C thomson of bardson Card son alberta canada H J holyoak of moab mrs A J young of monticello mrs J L mcconkie of vernal and A D holyoak of moab twenty two grandchildren and tw 0 great grandchildren also survive henry holyoak was one of earliest citizens he took a leading part in the settlement of the town and passed through the many hardships incident to the early colonization of the valley he was always in the front ranks in any move tending for the betterment of the community during the forty years of his residence here he established a reputation for sterling honesty that gained for him hundreds of staunch friends in his death moab loses a respected citizen and a revered pioneer i impressive funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the L D S church for mr holyoak there was a large attendance of sorrowing friends the opening prayer was offered by J II 11 johnson the speakers were J P lari sen J F barton of verdure and W R mcconkie all of whom praised mr holyoake Holy oaks rugged honesty and his lifetime of christian service the closing prayer was given by geor po A the choir sang i three hymns and mrs CJ meador rendered a solo oh my father at the cemetery the choir sang one selection and george A adams of monticello dedicated the grave |
