Show Editorial Library Week, April XliLSJ 17-2- 3 April 17 marks the beginning of National Library Week. Like the USO, a post or shiplmard library can be something of a home away from home for men and women in uniform. k Often, in the middle of military activity, y the library is one of the few places where personnel can settle .in a comfortable chair, listen to music, write letters and catch up on the magazines from back home. The library also offers something more important than relaxation. Perhaps no profession in the United States today can men as the military. These men claim so many have been their own teachers. For many, service libraries have been a school. The quality of service libraries varies. In some cases they of are little more than a few shelves of books on the meft-deca small drip. At large commands they often contain thousands of books, records, magazines and newspapers. But, in every case a maximum effort is exerted to provide the best library facilities possible under legal conditions. A library is a public collection of knowledge, a storehouse of answers In a world becoming more and more complex. In celebrating National Library Week, we recognize the need for, and value of, these collections regardless, of size or location. Another way of recognizing them is by using their facilities, not ' to the library's benefit, but your own. THE CLEVER METHODS of trench-coateespionage . agents are continually unearthed by government investigators. Clearly outlined procedures have been established to regulate the handling of classified information and documents. jThese things add up to a security-consciopublic. And g is a big responsibility, such in the Army, where watchfulness is essential, particularly during the present time of expansion and activity. BUT, IN OUR concentration on preventing a major security breach, were liable to overlook some obvious causes of dangerous information leaks. Take your telephone, for instance. It makes your job a lot easier but its not secure. Nor is the washroom or the snackbar, your desk drawer or your coat pocket. Never discuss classified information over the phone or in public places. In fact, never discuss it anywhere unless the other person has a definite "need to know." NEVER TUCK classified documents in your pocket or desk drawer for even a few moments, and never leave them in die open unattended. In short, dont let the habits of daily routine lull your common-sense security consciousness. It would be mighty embarrasto be on the watch for spies - and be done-i- n by your own sing (ANF) telephone. . z. Counopolitan, frozen, light and dark meat . When youre in the armed forces, you are a fighting man, ready to do battle for your country. .INSIDE OUR country, we dont encourage fighting between persons who have problems. We have a system of courts and law to settle disputes between people. But some disputes are relatively small. Taking them to court may be too expensive and time consuming if it means hiring a lawyer, filing legal documents and appearing for trials. For the small disputes that inevitably come up when people live near to one another, there are in many cities small claims courts. These courts often sit at night, so litigants dont have to be away from work or duty. They are generally informal in their procedure and no lawyers or special documents are needed. IF YOU HAVE a claim against the tailor shop for spoiling your new uniform with a bum or the hardware store for losing your lawn mower and the owners refuse to make good their injury to you or if your former friend welshes on an IOU - dont punch anybody in the nose. Take him to court. Hie small claims court will probably be aide to give you a' hand in enforcing your rigjitfol claims - and in protecting you against unjust ones. Its the civilized way to handle your arguments. 4fl A DFG CERTIFICATE of Achievement is awarded to Sp4 Billy Dunn, 85th MF Platoon fos his outstanding service from August 1984 to March 1968, He served as a as- sistant patrol supervisor and patrol supervisor during that period and was cited for his unusual initiative, high standards and outstanding devotion to duty.
