TWENTY THREE nearly complete skeletons were recovered representing 12 different species of dinosaurs, most of which were beautifully preserved and as hard as the enclosing rock. The quarry and Split Mountain section nearby are replete with a great' variety of material of geologic Interest. The dinosaur fossils themselves occur in the Morrison Formation of Upper Jurassic Age and w'ere laid down in an old stream channel 140 million years ago. The quarry represents a sandbar or quiet cove in this ancient stream where tve dinosaurs were washed in and lodged in large numbers just as driftwood lodges along sandbars in rivers today. THE HISTORY OF the quarry began when Professor Earl Douglass of the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburg, Penn., discovered outcropping fossil bones on Aug. 19, 1909. The excavation cf the bones de , which ftag dp. fhg erated by the Carnegie Museum until 1923. In 1923 24 the National Museum, Washington, D. C., and the University of Utah collected material at the site. No fossils have been removed bv anyone since 1924. it has iong been the plan to relief scme 0f the remaining fossil ma- terial on the quarry face, leaving it etched out to form a striking exhibit in place. THE DUTY to God award is a culmination of four years work. To qualify for the award, David earned the Individual Aaronic Priesthood award for four years.
