Show April 30, 1980, Clearfield Courier, Sun Times, Sun Chronicle, Ben Lomond Beacon, Sporfstocular Wildcat Women It's nice to know hell be back E-Ha- nsen: By Bliss Pag 7 Fullmer Seventeen year old Paul Hansen was at the Weber County Memorial Hospital, Sunday evening, assisting the patients in their worship service, and he has been doing this service, now, for six years. He is on a first-nam- e basis with most of the pa tier! ts, and they love him for his compassionate service. He even led the.- singing, one night, when the music director failed to come. Why does a young teen-age- r do this sort, of thing? It is strictly voluntary. He is not there on assignment, but because he feels needed. He does it because thats the kind of man, this 6 1,$60 pound Roy High athlete is. He lovo those invalids and shut-in- s at Weber Memorial, and they love him. Paul, who was born on 28 February, 1963 to Gwen and P. Wayne Hansen, is a junior at Roy High School, and the ace pitcher on their baseball team. He is a coaches dream, and his teammates revere him. He works hard and loves the gamp, and has such a bubbly personalty, said Coach Fred Thompson. Hes a joy to work with. Paul is the baby of a family of six, and all of his four brothers were good athletes at Roy High School. Kevin, who is now 29, was the first baseball all-stto be picked out of Roy High School, way back when, Scott, who is 27, starred in football and baseball for the Royals. He was a left hander, with a lot of promise, but ruined his arm on a cold day against Ben Lomond. Roy won, the game in 13 innings, but lost their star pitcher, and it was only a practice game. Ken Hansen has the distinction of owning the only award blanket ever to be given in Roy High athletics. Ken is 26 now, ut lettered in four sports for the, Royals. He attended Dude College on scholarship, after his high school days. Shauna went to Ricks after graduating from Roy High, and will reJar graduate, this spring from Weber in Elementary State College Education. Craig Hansen pitched for Roy, and played football, as a linebacker in the days of Jim McMahon. Craig is now 21 years old. My brothers really helped me to I am in baseball, mused where get Paul. They started throwing baseballs at me when I was about six My years old, and never stopped, folks have supported me too, he continued. Dad and Mom never miss any of my games, and Dad often comes to the dugout to tell me what I am doing wrong, or what I could do to improve my game, and hes always right. The Hansens live on a 50 acre farm, where they have 20 acres in row-croand the rest in fruit trees. They operate the Cedar Crest Fruit Stand north of town on 19th West, and sell fruits and vetables, fresh out of the field. The Hansens also own 17 acres in Hooper, and 320 acres in Downey, Idaho. Needless to say, Paul spends his summers working on the farm, and playing ball. Paul is a man of many talents. He sings bass in the Royal choir, and choir at sang, last year in the the U.E.A. convention. Select students were recruited from all over the state for that honor. He is also scheduled to sing in the Chamber Choir for next year. Pauls greatest talent takes form when he steps onto the baseball mound. He is an intelligent player; one who studies his opponent with care and caution. He uses a fast-ba- ll and a drop curve, but has the batter guessing which is which on every pitch. It isnt uncommon to see opposing batters chasing his curve, as it goes into the dirt at the feet of the embarrassed batter, or to watch a bewildered batter, when he blows a fast ball past them. if I dont He uses a knuckle-bal-l, all-sta- see him do it, smiled Coach Thompson. Paul Hansen has a lot of goals in his young life. He wants to take T (thats Thompson) to the finals next year in baseball, and he wants to team and perhaps make the all-stget a baseball scholarship to college. He has an L.D.S. Mission in his plans, and would like to go into farming, after college. Paul is excited over next years prospect in all sports, and especially baseball. He is co.ivi.iced that his junior team mates, along with the strong sophomore athletes, can put Roy on top for the 1981 season. Paul is not only an ace pitcher, but he also bats clean-u- p on the baseball team. He was leading the team in batting, but went 0 for 3 at Sky View, last week, and is now in second with a .313 average. He got a hit in the Bonneville game that made possible the 0 victory over the Lakers. What has been your biggest thrill I asked young Paul in baseball? Hansen. Well, he drawled, I threw a in an game in the fifth or sixth grade, and that still feels good. He did admit that getting that RBI against Bonneville felt good. For the biggest play from the mound, Paul tells this one: This batter hit a screaming line drive for me, and it hit me in the head. I went down, but the ball bounced straight into the air, and the second-baseme- n caught it for a double play. Paul was dazed, but recovered to finish the game - and win. ar Vhat's on tap for the ladies Paul Hansen has a great life ahead of him. He has so much going for him. For this freckled face kid of seventeen, he has a great future in baseball, and in life. Hell get his scholarship, for he is not afraid to work for it. Hell have a good, full life, for that's the way he has it planned. Hell never lack for friends, because of his un- Thurs.-Sat- . Paul was on the mound, nursing a 0 lead, with just three hits scattered over six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors collected three more hits, chasing bad pitchers, and Coach Thompson beat the Royals summed it up this way: I felt so bad to see Paul pitched so well, and then get beat. 2-- 1. 400-met- 1500-met- 3000-met- 100-met- Sign-up- s TRACK WILDCAT INVITATIONAL: Saturday, May 3, 1980 Wildcat Stadium 3:00 p.m. $2 Adults $1 Students. (7-2- ), 7 1) 1, 8-- 1) Royals suffer defeat to Sky View Bobcats ; 4--3 By Bliss Fullmer Paul Hansen has got to be the most frustrated and disappointed Royal in town. Friday, at Sky View he struck out twelve Bobcats, but lost the game 4-- With Hansen on the mound, Sky View came up with nine hits, but most of them came off the bats of the top of the batting order. The Bobcats scored all their runs in the first and third innings. Roy had pulled even in its half of inning number three, but then Sky View came up with a pair of runs, and that proved to be enough. The Royals managed one more run in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, and too late. Hitting for Roy were Wade Jackline (two singles) Kenny Tulane and Joe Rizzuto. The loss mathmatically eliminated action Roy from any hope of play-of- f in the Utah State finals. Layton, in beating Clearfield is now on top with a 2 record, followed by Clearfield, and Weber with identical records. Bonneville is in fourth place with four wins and four losses, and Sky View has a 5 record. Roy owns the cellar, with only one win and seven losses. Roy plays Layton (here) and Clearfield (there) to wind up its 1980 baseball season. 6-- 5-- 3 3-- ., , 6-- 2-- 1 ar. senior from Roy High and a member of the Tumbling Team, recently succeeded in her first bid to represent the United States on the National Team. At the end of the trials, the top three competitors will represent the U.S. in international competitions during the next two years with the first meet scheduled in Switzerland in October 1980. At the first of these trials, held in Bozeman, Montana; Julie placed second in the Nation in womens tumbling after all five passes. She had problems with her second pass and ended up with a termination after a crooked rs half-twistin- g somersault caused her to tumble off the edge of the mat. This resulted in a fifth place standing after the three pass preliminaries were over. Julie, however, came back in the final two passes with outstanding performances to move back up to a second place finish. Miss Beaty is one of the few women tumblers in the U.S. currently throwing double-back- s in competition. She has represented the U.S. on the platform team in Bulgaria and is now hoping to represent power tumbling for the next two years. Julie will be making her next bid for the team in Quincy, Illinois, on May 24. If she places in one of the three top positions, she will be an automatic member of the team. If not, she will have one more chance on July 4 in Las Vegas, Nevada, after which the selection of the team will be final.
