Show J Sun Thursday, March 16, 1972 Chronicle BYU farm produces alfalfa Provo boasts special rock garden By Justin Scharff Provo, Utah is irobably the only place in the United States where alfalfa is grown in a rock garden. This is where the Brigham Young University, on a farm, produces the feed for its 600 dairy cows who in turn provide the milk and milk 400-ac- i1 tains higher yields than those generally produced elsewhere in Utah on better soils and under more favorable growing conditions. You wonder how he does it. "Single cropping, intensive fertilization and water management is the way we do it, said Dr. Farnsworth who unfl fairly recently followed tl. usual custom in Utah of planting alfalfa with an annual crop such as barley. re products for the dormitories s. and dining halls on the nm-pu- (f The farm is located on the Bingham Soil Series, described by geologists as . . .from 18 to 21 inches of medium texture soil plus rocks and gravel on top of several feet of boulders, rocks and gravel. Single cropping, effective fertilization and farm management have skyrocketed alfalfa yields at the University farm fiuin 1.7 tons per acre on the first cutting the second year to 4 tons per acre. Some fields are currently producing eight tons of alfalfa per st What is going on today at the Brigham Young University farm is no small-tim- e operation. Dr. Farnsworth and his assistants, Rulon Wistisen, and Bill Wood, farm operations manager, have a oal of growing, among other crops, 1,100 tons of alfalfa and 3,600 tons of corn silage annually. They have already reached their target for silage and are close tu attaining it for alfalfa. probably wouldnt select the Bingham Soil Series forgrow ing Utahs No. 1 cash crop.
