MacKNIGHT, opportunity to take a slap at busy-bod- y bureaucrats who had no business stating their personal opinions anyway, we have never yet heard of a huge company such as U. S. Steel scared out by private opinions E, J. VLAHOVICH, Publishers PttS ASSOCIATION- NATIONAL 6DITOFUAI of small-lxir- e politicians or political appointees, from getting what they really wanted. While a combination of Henry Kaiser, Colorado Fuel and Iron and others may swing Geneva, we dont think it is likely or practical. U. S. Steel, which has all the advantage, because it is already operating the plant and because it has assets to handle thp deal, has decided against it for reasons which do not appear on the surface but which are real and practical from its own point of DO WE WAOE SOOCKAbSORD view. DO THEY WANT GENEVA TO DIE? Withdrawal of the United States Steel Gecompany as prospective bidder for the neva plant at Frovo is a serious blow, but it is no surprise to people who have watched the situation carefully during the past months, when rumors were flying thick and fast that this or that interest was trying to get an inside track on the property, or would submit a proposal to lease or buy it any day. At the risk of sticking our neck out, this writer has some personal observations aliout Geneva, its possibilities and the reasons for some things now obvious. We believe that the future operation of Geneva is essential to the industrial development of Utah, a fact which is conceded by those who have the states interest at heart. In the first place, we have believed for a long time that U. S. Steel would welcome Geneva out of the way entirely. In other words, not operating at all, because it has potential possibilities of becoming a dangerbusiness against ous competitor for post-wa- r eastern established plants. its own long Then why does not U. S. Steel buy it to reduce this competition? Decause it would then be placed in the position of competing inagainst itself from two widely separatedrailwould and it deprive dependent units, roads, in which it is said to have large interests, of freight revenues to the west coast. We think that the U. S. Steel company has, after careful consideration, come to the conclusion that the venture would be un- in profitable, from its standpoint, at least, the this that and is of steel, the production main and paramount reason that it is not interested. But it is vitally interested in whether or not the plant operates in the postwar period as competition. One weak reason that Fresident Benjamin Fairless of U. S. Steel gives for withdrawing from the field was that certain politicians had made public statements that they would rather see western interests acquire the There has been much fanfare from Kaiser and the Colorado Fuel and Iron as to their desire and intention to make an offer, and it has provided them with a lot of publicity all free. Notice that in about every story Kaiser releases on Geneva, he puts in a plug for the new auto he claims he will manufacture come the wars end. Many months have gone by since the government let it be known that the plant was up for disposal, yet not one bona fide offer has been made its all been a lot of newspaper publicity. As can well be expected, politicians have taken up the issue and it has provided them with a fine political football, too. They claimed to have met with high officials, have made many optimistic statements, spoken on the subject innumerable times .before all; kinds of gatherings, hinted broadly that they knew the inside, and that Utah need have no fear, Geneva would operate. Now, if Utahs senator and congressmen know whereof they speak, let them get down to cases, cut out the talk and the political banquets and go to work doing something concrete about Geneva. But we dont think they know any more about it than you or I. There has been much wishful thinking and talking about Geneva, and the decision of the U. S. Steel company, the one concern which could and probably should operate the plant, makes the future look pretty dark. It is beginning to dawn on a great many people that the enterprise is not practical and would prove unprofitable for private industry. We do not think that Kaiser, Colorado Fuel and Iron or U. S. Steel want the plant to operate at all, and they may be able to force this conclusion by refusing to consider the plant, thus ruling out everyone but the government itself. If the plant and its possibilities are allowed to stagnate, we think that Kaiser, Colorado Comfortable Transport! ANYWHERE Afty VALLEY Air service PH. 14R11 pRlCE ICE CREAM Af hom.-A- ny No nov0rD, .
