The huge army which infested the fair grounds last week, swarming on structures and crawling over a large land area, is disappearing. The pest is also disappearing from the soil conservation camp, following the action of C. C. C. enrollees in cutting weeds and eliminating vegetation upon which the worms thrived. Efforts to keep the worms out of the Price City park have been successful, although a large number of gardens have been considerably damaged. Ray Branch, field agent for the Holly Sugar company, reported that the worms have been fairly well checked in the sugar beet fields, and it is not expected that farmers will suffer the loss of any acreage as a result of the ravages of the worms. The sugar company supplied growers with a poison compound and sprays, which were immediately placed in service and which have been used to good effect. J. B. Jewkes, district agricultural agent, this wefjc reiterated his suggestion that gardeners and farmers combat the outbreak by placing water lines around crop areas. This method of checking the worms is regarded by Mr. Jewkes as the most effective in keeping the pest away from crops.
