Show Needed Win For The Lady Braves A Much Student Writer: Audrey Banks When the third game came around, the Braves were ready to show the Wasps what they were made of. Dantzel Geary started the serve off for North Summit. She served five consecutive serves, giving the Lady Braves a gudd start. and Lyndsay Carrie Rognan Kirkham had some.outstanding hits, adding to the North Summit enthusi-asrErin Wilson hit the ball into a Juab block, but the Wasps' efforts failed, giving the 15-- 2 win to the Lady Braves. 15-1- 1. The North Summit Lady Braves played the Juab Wasps on Oct. 2. During the first game, the Lady Braves played tough but couldn't pull ahead of the Wasps. Juab caught North Summit off guard with their teamwork and defense, beating the Lady Braves 15-In the second game North Summit was determined to end up on top. They improved their game by pulling together and beating Juab . 9. r- Stars and Stripes Week .Student Writer: Kimberly Robinson September 1 1. 2001 set in motion a chain of events that will change the lives of people forever. The North Summit High School Leadership class saw this chain of events as a time to show our patriotism. To encourage North Summit Students as well as community members to show their pride for our country the N.S. Leadership class is sponsoring a week called Stars and Stripes Week. During this week there will be a number of events to bring patriotism to our school and community. Stars and Stripes week will be held Oct. 15 through the 1 8th. The following is a list of events that the community is invited to attend: Monday, there w ill be a Flag Raising Ceremony held al the football field beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday, a patriotic assembly will be held starting at 10:15 am. I nis assembly will he show casing the Flag and Flag Etiquette. Thursday, after the home football game against Grand, the Leadership class will be holding a Flag Retirement Ceremony. We encourage community members to attend this ceremony. We also would like to encourage everyone to bring a candle to the football game to use during the Retirement. The students will also be receiving ribbons to wear to show their support to the victims of the World Trade Center Disaster. Students are also being asked to bring one dollar a day during this week to go into a fund for the relief effort. We would also like to encourage the community members to wear red on londay. white on Tuesday, blue on Wednesday, and red. white, and blue on Thursdav. Your ticket to a secure retirement. Oct. 4. the Lady Braves faced the Eagles for the second time this season. The freshmen started out with an easy win in the first game, but were unable to get a second win, and lost the match. The JV was up next. The girls put up a great effort and beat the Eagles in two well played games. . Before the Varsity game started luan Diego committed a great act of Band Day Student Writer: Julie Hewson Saturday, Oct. 6. the North Summit Marching Band participated in the University of Utahs Band Day. High School marching bands from across Utah participated. The High School bands were invited to perform with the U. of U. marching band in the half time show of the Southern Florida football game at Rice Eccles Stadium. The bands gathered at noon for a three hour long practice. The U. of U. band ran through their half-tim- e show and practiced the three numbers they would be performing with the high school bands. Sections divided up and the U. of U. musicians were assigned to help the high school students and give them helpful tips. Next the bands gathered to their assigned spots and ran through the numbers. Scott Hagen, the U. of U. hand director gathered the high school musicians and opened up a period. Hagen encouraged the students to stick with hand and keep it an option for their college careers. The groups ran through the whole show one more and time, went for a lunch-breathen transported the equipment into the stadium. In honor of the vic- tims of the September 1 1 Tragedy, each girl on the North Summit Volley ball team was presented with a rose, a candle, and a card. The Varsity Team had an excellent match against the Eagles. Hitting, passing, serving, blocking, and setting wear al performed with an unmatchable cnthusiism. When asked about how Band Day went, Mr. Farr, the North Summit band director, enthusiastically replied, It was awesome, fun. and educational. Everyone got to play with someone in ,heir instrument that was better than them." While the students spent a lot of time practicing their parts and working hard, they also got a chance to enjoy themselves. Trumpet player, Jace Ovard, stated. I learned a lot and had fun. My favorite part was playing at half time. Being in the stadium playing in front of all those people was really cool. The Ute band was fun to play with because they knew what they were doing and they were very good." "Band Day was a great success." said Farr. That was the largest audience weve ever performed in front of. It increased awareness of the importance of the band at a football game." This is only the second year of renewed marching band at North Summit. Things like Band Day increase the students' comprehension of band and exposes the students to the possibilities of achievement and excellence for their band. The second half started well, but at the beginning of the fourth quarter NS started to have problems. The Freshmen lost two of Garrett Rithins and Iaigan Bryant concussions. In the end, however, the Braves held onto the lead to bring the Braves a victory 16-The JV fought a haid game last Thursday against the Millard Eagles, but the Eagles kept their title of "undefeated". Fifth, eighth, and eleventh grade students in the State of Utah are required to take this test. This test is a comparison of each student to other students throughout the hation. The eighth graders will have an appointment with Mrs. Jaussi, and she will share the scores with the FFA Holds Monthly Leadership Night FFA Reporter: Amy Blackburn Have you ever wondered how to build a team? The North Summit FFA members no longer have to wonder. In September. Tiffany C'legg and Emherly Clark presented leadership night on team building. The members participated in activities and discussions. There was a great turn out. The activity was a great success. On October 16. the judging teams will travel to Snow College to participate in the judging contests. The chapter also has a few members going to National Convention in Louisville. They will be leaving Oct. 23. Also the monthly activity will he held on Oct. 29. students and their parents. A profile will be sent home as well. There will he a note in the newsletter so fifth graders parents can visit Mrs. Jaussi in November or December to review students' progress. The test is normed for the 50th percentile. This means that students at their grade level should score within that 50 percentile. When your students' scores are received, please check with Mrs. Jaussi if you would like help interpreting those scores. Braves Travel To Millard Student Writer: Barry Williams The North Summit Varsity Football team traveled to Millard numlast Friday to challenge ber one ranked team the Millard Eagles. North Summit and Millard were both scoreless in the first quarter where the Braves defense shut down the Millard offense. North Summit hud an opportunity to score but strong defense by Millard held the Braves with 6 seconds to go in the second quarter. Going in at half time the score was North Summit O Millard 12. The Braves played tough defense in the second half but remained scoreless. North Summit went on to lixtse to the Eagles w ith a score of 20 to 0.
