Weight gain can and does occur when a person gives up smoking. It's one of the excuses people give for continuing to smoke. "But. pound for pack, youre better off giving up cigarettes," according to Dr. Jeffrey L. Anderson, president of the Utah affiliate of the American Heart Association. "Putting on pounds need not be a consequence of putting down cigarettes" Anderson said. By looking at the reasons that may lead to weight gain, you can develop action plans to avoid an expanded waistline. Reason 1: Increased appetite When you quit smoking, you may experience an increase in appetite and food intake. Since you no longer smoke after dinner, you may decide to have an extra helping, or a dessert. Suggested counteractions: cut food into smaller pieces to extend dinner time. Eat more slowly so that you are not the first person finished. Get up from the table immediately after eating. Save fall. dessert for later; substitute treats for rich desserts. You may choose to .housebreak your puppy 'to news-- 1 papers on a vinyl or tile floor, or' to the outdoors depending on his size, whether you live in town or in the country, and whether he will be left indoors or out when youre away. Whichever method you use, the basic process is the same. Watch your pet carefully when he awakens, has been playing," and after meals. If he starts to sniff around, circle, or squats, carry him quickly to the newspaper our outdoors. When he relieves himself in the proper location, pet and praise him; when he. has an accident, scold him gently and show him where he should have gone, but never hit him or rub his nose in the accident. Be patient; puppies have short memories and require consistent training. To teach him to go outdoors, clean up an accident with an old, clean rag and stake the rag to an out of the way spot outside. Take him out to that spot when he is ready. The odor will make him think he's gone there before, and , soon consider it "his" place. For outdoor trained dogs you may wish to keep newspapers inside until he can make it through, the night or through the hours . when . you are at., work. hell . When you cant watch him closely, keep him restricted to a Soft small area near his bed. You near his bed will help him learn control.
