The concept of a middle school is something that many people bumping. Our students have sometimes don't understand unless they have students involved. We talked with our superintendent, Mr. Peterson, and he gave us some facts about the middle school concept. First there is the idea of "bumping. Bumping is when higher level classes are offered to the middle school students that are ready. Examples used in our school would be classes such as Algebra I, Journalism, Woods, Metals, and Computers. These classes would be difficult to offer to students in the mentaxy setting. Therefore, they bump or push the actually high school curriculum. We have found that in our district our standard achieveHome-Economic- s, ment test scores have risen significantly in the past few years partially due to the SKI RESORTS idea of . scored well above the national average on these tests. Students between the ages of 10 and 14 years of age have their own personalities and growth patterns that fit neither with younger elementary students or older high school students. These needs can best be met in a school setting of their own. Data is available to support this idea. Students of this age group are able to socialize better with others their own age helping to solve the problems of "growing up too fast. Our school board and admin-.- . istration are dedicated to provide the best education possible for our students. This means keeping the middle school concept in our district. To do this it will require a bond election because the present middle school building must be closed. Even if this closure was not in the future, we have too many .I1-- 7200 SOUTH Rodeway Inn 280 West 7200 South Midvale, Utah 84047 students for the present buildings. The bond election has been set for March 3, 1987. Most taxpayers want to know what this means to them. On a $3.5 million building, someone living in a home with a market value of $60,000 would be paying an additional tax of $5.50 per month. As middle school students, we encourage you as taxpayers to attend meetings that are being held on this subject. If you would like to host a meeting or learn more about this problem, Mr. Richins, the principal of the middle school, or Superintendent Peterson are available to talk to you and your friends. One meeting was held on Dec. 8, hosted by the PTA. Attendance could have been better. We would encourage everyone to come out in the future.
