PAGE B3 Students explore colleges on the annual ETS College Tour Eighteen juniors from South Summit High School joined students from Wasatch, Union and Uintah High on the annual TRiO/ETS College Tour last week. Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federally funded program designed to help first-generation, low-income students achieve post-high school success. The program was established by President Johnson in 1964 and has been supported by the South Summit School District for over 10 years. One objective of the program is to take juniors on a tour of local colleges. The trip is free to the students and is an invaluable resource for students deciding which college they would like to attend. Colleges visited included Utah Valley University, which also hosted a dance for the students, University of Utah, Westminster College, Utah State University and Salt Lake Community College. Students also got a tour of the State Capitol, a visit to the BYU Museum of Art, and a trip to Lagoon to top things off. Among the highlights of the trip was a performance of the musical “Damn Yankees” at the Terrace Plaza Playhouse in Ogden. The cast was kind enough to put on a “command performance” for the group, and the students were delighted with the Back row: Cassandra Lance, LaTeeka Tilleman, Bryanne Hancock and Shelby Van Cott. Middle row: Megan Peterson, Natasha Walker Lexie Reidhead, Lindsey Johnson, Haulsey Larsen and Valeria Hernandez. Front row: Shantell Taylor, Katie Leavitt and Eric Adair. Not pictured: McKinley Smoot, Casey Roper, Brittany Bodily, Brianna Bodily and Josh Gerlach. quality of the singing, dancing and acting. They also enjoyed meeting the cast after the play. A favorite of many students was the tour of Westminster College, where they got to see a dorm room on the beautiful urban campus. Although Westminster is a private school and more expensive than many of the state colleges, our tour guide and admissions counselor assured the students that there is plenty of financial aid and scholarship money for those interested in attending. Many students also enjoyed the visit to UVU’s Culinary Arts Institute, where they saw some amazing cakes and bread sculptures. After the trip to USU in Logan, students now know what it takes to become a “true Aggie”! Although the students (and advisors!) were exhausted after three days of walking, most felt that the College Tour was a worthwhile experience, and many were excited to begin planning for their college experience. Student leaders for the 2009-10 May brings such a whirlwind of activities that it more often feels like May-hem. One of the many activities on the calendar for May at South Summit High is the choosing of the student leaders for the 2009-2010 school year. The first elections held are for Student Body Officers. To qualify, each candidate must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 of higher, must not be on the ineligibility list for citizenship, and must submit a petition signed by 30 students and 8 faculty members supporting their candidacy. Primary elections are held as needed, and each candidate has the opportunity to present a speech to the student body explaining why they are the best choice for the job. Two candidates are selected for the final campaign. The finals involve three days of campaigning that includes posters, speeches, and creating and presenting a skit to the student body. The skits this year were entertaining while providing some comic relief. The White Party presented the idea that in these hard economic times, even popular competitions might have to combine to save money. This presented the thought of seeing both the Mr. Universe and the Miss America Pageant combined. Of course, it produces more laughs if the male SBO candidates appear as the Miss America contestants, and the female SBO candidates represent the Mr. Universe muscle flexors. The Green Party presented a combination of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, complete with MC Alex Trebek, and Vanna White as the question turner. Contestants were the Spice Girls, Ace Ventura, and Forrest Gump. The questions were varied, but the answer was always the green team. After the final voting, the students of South Summit chose the following to lead them next year. McKinley Smoot - President, Marci Jones - Vice President, Brittany Bodily Secretary, Lexie Reidhead and Josh Limb - Entertainment Chairs, and Britton Coil - Historian. The next week, the process continued as the classes elected their officers for next year. Candidates had to meet the same requirement for GPA, citizenship, and petition, but there is not formal campaigning. The Senior Class Officers are Cody Thornton - President, Jonsen Crandall - Vice President, Katie Leavitt - Secretary, Megan Peterson and Connor Peck - Entertainment Chairs, and Annalese Neuenschwander Historian. Their main responsibilities include winning Homeand planning coming Graduation. Juniors Officers elected were Emily Kueser - President, McCae Bonner - Vice President, Paige Peterson - Secretary, Mikala Farrington and Brian Adlard - Entertainment Chairs, McKena Woolstenhulme - Historian.
