Show PAGE A8 JUNE 12, 2009 Summit County News Echo Fishing Derby a Big Derby Danny Martinez - 1st Place Fishing Derby winner CHERYL OVARD SCN EDITOR Fishing was good - boats dotted the waters - and despite the winds during the day everyone enjoyed the 41st Annual Fishing Derby held on the free fishing day June 6. The hourly fishing tally’s were coming in with fish measuring anywhere from 20-23+ inches long - and the Echo resort was bustling with boats being launched and brought in throughout the day. Long-time owner, Joye Ray, said that because of bad weather during the spring, it has been slower than usual, Steve Morgan - 2nd Place Fishing Derby winner but the free fishing day was a great success. Winners of the trophies and checks for their “big catch” were: 1st place, Danny Martinez of Clearfield with his 23 3/4” catch. Danny and his friend were fishing from the opening hour of the free fishing day, and headed to the deep waters on the other side of the dam. Danny caught several fish throughout the day, but his prize was definitely one that he knew would probably be a big one! He likes to fish “catch and release” - for the sport of it. Ironically, his friend also fished from the same boat was with him all day - and never had a bite! Danny won Kody Iverson - 3rd Place Fishing Derby winner $500 for his grand prize! 2nd place went to Steve Morgan, and his catch was 22 7/8”. He was both pleased and happy with his prize fish, the $200 check, and had a great time at Echo. 3rd place went to Kody Iverson. He went away with $150 for his prize fish of 22 3/8”. The Carp winner Dee Sutherland - 27” Carp (not pictured) went home with $50. The trophies were also very beautiful, and the proud winners can show them off for years to come boasting ot their success at Echo Resort, thanks to the efforts of Joye Ray, her staff, and the judges: Jan Neilson and Yvonne Broadhead.
