A iiiilcult Operation Was performed last Sunday on the neck of John Mason by Dr Smart, aud Doctors Sleater and Aird of Provo. The shock was so severe se-vere that the doctors remained at the bedside for several hours until the patient had entirely rallied. Under the skillful and tender nursing of Mrs. E.N.Pratt Mr. Mason is in a fair way to recover. Sugar Comparisons. The Sugar Beet contest, conducted by the Orange Judd Farmer, last year show some very interesting details. , For the record showing most olear- ly the methods pursued and the results re-sults obtained, without regard to yield. Christian A.Madsen of Gunnison Gunni-son Utah, obtained a prize of $100.00; his crop averaged 18 per cent suuar. The first prize crop of Utah was raised by John Woodhouse of Liehi. for which he received a prize of $100. M.T Woodhouse of the same place, received the second prize of $75. Those crons averaged 24 tons of clean beets to the acre, and contained from 16 to 17 per cent sugar. One of the prize crops, at Rocky Ford. Colorado, went 39 tons to the acre, and contained six tons of sugar, as against four tons in the Woodhouse crops. This yield is dwarfed by a yield of ten tons of sugar per acre, reported from Hawaii. Thus the farmers far-mers will note that it pays to culti-tivate culti-tivate the sugar beet. The Captive White Boy. The following is the first of a series of sketches that will be published in these columns as they are handed in and prepared. In the year 1853, just before the outbreak out-break of the Walker war, my father's family were living upon his farm up the creek, which at that time was a real wilderness, being surrounded on every side by a dense thicket, with only an occasional .mazy path through the almost impenetrable thicket. One afternoon a few Indian braves came along the rath that skirted the clearing, and in their midst was a white boy about 9 years old. The poor little fellow looked so sad and worn, and when he saw me he tried to get away from his grim guard, but they cuffed him in a brutal brut-al manner, and dragged him along, until they were out of sight. The last I saw of the boy he was still pulling pull-ing back and crying. Father was not at home at the time, an j I never heard anything afterward of the boy nor do I remember that any one saw him. Soon after the war broke out we were compelled to move into the "Foit row,'-" for safety. Ether Blanchard. The Original Shrew.
