Down at Elsinore Judge Wal lace has arousad the ire of the Socialists, and they have pro claimed a boycott against his paper the Sevier Valley Echo The Judge is showing them a good time, however. But really, Judge, you've no right to express ex-press opinions of your own. What are you running a coun try newspaper for, anyway? In England at the time of the reat plague it was reported that no one living in ntobaro- ist'a house fell sick with the isea-e. This caused a great de- and for tobacco. Here he says n his diary: "I remember that I beard formerly Tom Rogers, ho was yeoman beadle, say tat when he was a schoolboy at Ston that year when the plague ragdd all the boys of that school were obliged to smoke every morning, and that he was never whipped so much in his life as le was one morning for hot Bujokinz- ' CANNING I 'AC 'WHY, Trovo people are after a canning factory, and seem to be going after it right. Practical men and local business men are pushing the enterprise. It would not be surprising if they had it ready for operation next summer. Springville ought to have such an institution, but one at Provo will do us more good than none in the valley at all. Our people are somewhat like the men of Missouri they "have to be shown." If I hey can see that a cannery at Provo is proving a good thing, they may conclude to build one here. "Nothing succeeds like success." Then again, a canning factory at Provo w ill not be so far away that it will not be possible to market the fruits ot our "truck patches" there if given an opportunity. People here who feel an interest in that line of business would do well to subscribe sub-scribe for some of the slock and help the enterprise' along Until the time comes when this town has life enough to go after a factcry of its own, it can lo no better than to assist its neighbor. From the nature of the soil and climate, and the practically limited amount of land and water in Utah county, future development in an agricultural way must be in tbe lino of "truck" and fruit farming This will scarcely be' possible without the assistance of a number of such institutions as canning factories and fruit evaporators. Freight rates are such that products sent to dis tant maikets should be in as nearly a finished condition as possible. - Again, the profits from this line of farming and gardening are much greater than in any other line. A greater ml ntiop ff iAa ftii.t l.n n m ployed I it Ihe cultivation of the .soil, and a much denser popula- ' , . . . ' .,, tion supported,. All this Will be Ihe means of establishing oilier and tributary industries '!- I 1 , . t i nere ougm to be no hesitancy in encouraging such enterprises. At present t he best blood of Utah in its agri cultural population is being drained away to build up other states. This would not be -so bad if Ihe places of these emigrants were being well-filled, but at present they are not. As a rule it is only a non-progress ive, unenterprising element among our people who are con tent with present conditions. The establishment of the sugar beet industry in this country did much to reveal the possibilities of intensive agri culture to a whole lot of people who scarcely knew what to do to better their condition. A few canneries would forward the work. Then perhaps men t would not be so close fisted with their money in a public way, when t hey saw a chance of making more. An expectant country has not been disappointed in President Roosevelt's message. It has the true ring, as is proper in the speech of the spoke mian of a mighty hik! aggressive nation. He outlines a broad program for the administration, and will need the support of a strong majority of the nation to carrv it through. The people have faith in President Roosevelt, lowever, and he will not lack backing. Roosevelt is a name fre quently mispronounced.
