On last Friday morning the papers cams out with such glowing accounts of the new mining discovery, west of Lake Shore, that the reporter for The Independent thought he would run the floating rumors to the earth, and find out how much truth there was in them. So in company wlUi two other brave and adventurous youngjellows, he started about noon Friday for the scene of the commotion, armed with a two days supply of grub, a pick and a hundred location notices. After getting oft the road and wandering wan-dering around in a cow pasture for some time they at last jfot on the right trail, and soon found the center of tho New Eldorado. It "was found there had been a great excitement and that all the country round about the first location was secured, even unto the shore of the lake. The reporter re-porter was amused at a location notice which some wag had posted and which read somewhat after this fashion: We the undersigned, having this day.complied with all the laws and regulations of Goshen, do locate all the cranes on the lake, all the suckers therein, oue carp, and all the dry land west of here. Signed, T. Mattey, Hot Tomales. When our party reached the camp there was from fifty to seventy-five men scattered around the district. We were Informed that there was from 200 to 300 men on the ground the day before and that there had been one row. A Payson man tried to run Mr. Gay, the first discoverer, off his claim, which, of course, resulted result-ed in a fight, in .wuick the parties clinched and rolled down the mountain. moun-tain. . This" was not a very pleasant experience, and It cooled the ardor of the would-be claim jnmpersome'what, lie left promising to return on the morrow with re-enforcement9, but up to the time of our departure he had not shown up. It was wel! for him that he did not, as Mr. Gay and his friends were prepared to give him a -warm reception. Just as we were leaving a traveling saloon struck the camp, but our party was in two much of a hurry to give a report of our investigation to 6top and sample their goods, but suppose that it was like the stock in trade of all traveling saloons able to kill at 1.000 yards off-hand without raising the sights. The excitement proved to hoover rock which went 82 cent in gold per ton, and any one wishing to invest in mines can now buy cheap in that district. Billy Ridd, traveling passenccr agent for the 11. G. W., and Alex Mitchell, of the C, M. & St. P., were down to see the fun, and as usual Billy proved to be a Jonah to the camp. A company composed of Messrs. W. J. llldd, Alex. Mitchell, O. TVV Ileintz, A. E. Welby, F. A. Wadleigh, J. W. Snyder and E. A. Gregory had just located when the boom collapsed with a dull, sickening thud, news having been received that its foundations were laid in 62 cent rock. Billy is now looking around for a friend to take in on the ground floor. . Lively. Changes of ClimaU Failed. Miss Ella Hills, the popular and fashionable dress designer of 68 West 3rd Scutta Street, Salt Lake City says: " I suffered with asthma almost as long as I can remember, summer and wlutcr alike. My breathing was so difficult at times it seemed I could not live. About every two weeks, I would be confined to my room. I have visited many different localities and health resorts, In the hope that a change of climatic conditions would relieve me, but all in vain. It is almost al-most needless to say that I have tried many remedies, but not until I. began Doctor O. W. Shores Catarrh Cure and Cough Cure, did I receive any permanent relief. 1 will take pleasure pleas-ure in recommending this grand remedy to those suffering." For sale by C. J. Peterson Sprlngvllle Utah. Tho StaU Carnival. "One of the happiest Inspirations will be the reign of the Queen of Utah over the people during the carnival. This queen will illustrate the marvelous mar-velous beauty to which women of the State attain, and her ladies of honor will be selected from the most beautiful beauti-ful women in the State, one from each county." The foregoing is one of the paragraphs para-graphs found in the circular sent out by the committe having in charge the Mid-Summer carnival. The Independent Indepen-dent publishes this one only this week from a lack of space the balaucc will come next week. It appears that Salt Lake intends to have a right good time at which she desires the co-operation of the whole State. Spring-ville Spring-ville has a greater number of beautiful beauti-ful ladies in proportion to its population popula-tion than any other city in the State; hence The Independent hastens to nominate one, who, if not accepted by the whole State, will by Utah county MissaOora Groesbeck. That parsimonlousness in public i n no va trans, that a) wa js, opposes local enterprises,, because some of their neighbors may be made richer by them, is not only culpable but mean to the most contemptable degree; more especially when such jealousies are against small home industries, such as tanneries, starch factories, canneries, potteries, "geode" polishing etc. No better indication of a live go a head village than an effort, if nothing noth-ing more, toward something of the kind above named can be given. When worthy capitalists, arc seeking seek-ing homes in the salubrious vales of the Hockeys, they are sure to notice tbeup to date, village paper crowding crowd-ing the past weeks doings, together with the hopes of the present, and future fears. When the stranger has finished reading read-ing all the ads of that paper he lays it carefully down in a conspicuous place on the table, with the remark "I'll have to visit that town before I go! Smith told the people of Coalville last Saturday Satur-day that the manifesto Is not a manifesto mani-festo in the sense in which it is used simply an address to the people, and did not add a single new duty, hut the doctrine therein enunciated has been a long established rule of the church; that it was not a rerelatlon; that he believed It to be the will of Gjd that it should be presented to the people at this time.
