Show Thursday. February 1, 2007 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 11 n ro 9 9 3 And the Sydney Joyner SJHS STAFF WRITER Just this last semester, the Springville Junior High School brought back the Peer Court. The Peer Court is a court system run by 15 students. Students, who have a complaint about something, some-thing, fill out a referral sheet; which gets turned into the office. The office then gives the referral sheet to the class. The class then goes over the referral refer-ral sheets, making note of which ones should be dealt with first. The class then tells the students that they will be summoned to court. There are three judges, instead of . Springville Jr. High to stage "Beauty and the Beast" This year the Springville Jr. High School is putting on the musical "Beauty and the Beast." Tryouts were earlier this month. Mrs. Walker (the director di-rector and choir teacher) says "The audition process pro-cess is exhausting because there are always so many students auditioning. This year we had five hours of acting call backs because it was so important to find the right actors for each part." When we asked her if she was happy with the talent she got from the students she said "Yes. The talent was excellent. Several students cast as leads were unknown to me before the auditions. The teacher who has been at SJHS the longest Bree Hathaway SJHS STAFF WRITER We decide to interview Mrs. Burton, the teacher who has been at Springville Spring-ville jr. high the longest! Mrs. Burton has been working at SJHS from 1968 till today. Since she has been here a couple things have changed around the school; there has been two renovations to the buildings. The student court learned about how a court system is to be run. They started off with learning what courtroom decorum deco-rum is and progressing to opening statements and objections. At one point during the semester, two different lawyers came in to help out with opening statements. The Peer Court had many cases throughout the semester including ones dealing with swearing to ones dealing with disruptions disrup-tions during class. The judges were fair in all of the cases making It's always fun to find new talent!" They are coming along splendidly with the play. The cast wakes up early every morning so they can arrive on time to school by 6 a.m.! "We have an excellent cast which is making it easy to make good progress. prog-ress. She's getting a whole lot of help putting on this production from "parents and two high school students-Andrew Larsen and Rebecca Jenson- directing of the school is new. Mrs. Burton has taught eighth grade choir, ninth grade choir, jr. high performing, per-forming, reading, ninth grade drama, eighth grade speech, eighth grade English, and ninth grade English. Mrs. Burton's favorite favor-ite subject that she has taught is ninth grade drama. dra-ma. Their adviser, ad-viser, Mr. David Hansen, made sure of this by meeting meet-ing with the judges during the time the verdict was being made. "The class was a success," suc-cess," according to one student, "because students were more willing to refer re-fer someone to the court instead of referring someone some-one to the administration office. It also showed students stu-dents were having a say in what punishments were to be given according to what they did wrong." The Peer Court was unable un-able to continue the second semester due to schedule conflicts. the music. "I put on the musical every year to give students stu-dents an opportunity to be involved in an excellent production I also believe that doing theatre bonds friendships that will last all through high school." Mrs. Walker said when I asked her what the reason rea-son was for putting on this musical. She hopes you will come and see the show! She has worked at SJHS so long just because that is her calling in life. She worked at two different differ-ent other schools Provo High School and Payson Jr High School. " v 7 Student to Mrs. Bales went to school at Springville Jr. High from 1970 to 1971. She did not like school but she did like to go to this school. Now, she is the secretary at the school. Mrs. Burton was her teacher and she had lots of fun in her class. We asked Mrs. Bales if there was anything in the school that she would like to change and she said, Music helps Jessie Kolesar SJHS STAFF WRITER Here at Springville Jr. High we appreciate music as best we can with various vari-ous classes such as orchestra, orches-tra, choir, and band. There are currently 345 students attending these classes. "Music makes you look at the world different, students stu-dents are more aware of there surroundings. Most students who play (or sing) become motivated and get better grades they also learn self discipline." said Mrs. Boone as she explains music and students. The reason that Mrs. Bales wanted to be the secretary of the school is because she loves kids and she wanted tp have the same time off that her kids have including the summers sum-mers and the holidays. wind and percussion instruments, in-struments, as Mrs. Booth teaches with discipline and prestige.
