Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, February 16, 2006 Bighorn Sheep study begins in Southeastern Utah 14 A study to learn how hiking, hik-ing, biking and off -highway vehicle riding affect desert bighorn sheep is underway in southeastern Utah. During the last week in January, the Division of Wildlife Resources used a helicopter he-licopter to capture 15 bighorn sheep (4 rams and 11 ewes) in and near Canyon-lands Canyon-lands National Park. A "gunner" in the helicopter heli-copter fired a capture net over individual sheep, entangling entan-gling the sheep in the net. A Smugger" then jumped to the ground and administered antibiotics an-tibiotics and medications to the sheep before fitting collars col-lars around their necks. Af fixed to the collars were Very High Frequency (VHF) and Global Positioning Satellite Satel-lite (GPS) radios and transceivers. trans-ceivers. The radios and transceivers will allow biologists biolo-gists to relocate individual sheep from the ground, from the air or via satellite. The DWR is conducting the study in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management. Manage-ment. Both agencies want to learn more about the effects jeeps, OHVs, bicycles and hiking have on the whereabouts where-abouts and movements of these "wild woolies." Desert bighorns have been part of the Utah landscape for thousands of years. An cient Native Americans commonly com-monly depicted bighorn sheep in their petroglyphs and pictographs. Bighorns were probably the most common com-mon big game animal in Utah, but they were nearly extirpated from the state by the late 1800s. During the past several decades, the DWR has made huge strides in returning the bighorn to its ancestral range and homeland. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and desert bighorn sheep are now found in many of Utah's counties, and their numbers and distribution are expected to increase in future years. h V ,VV jmm,, j "Sj jJI g COlMJKGOu Dr. Iroer Caywood & Dr. Rick Winward Eye & Vision Care PROTECT YOUR VISION!
