Show Thursday, February 16, 2006 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 13 OBITUARIES Lawrence Benjamin Simmons Lawrence Benjamin Simmons Sim-mons was born June 19, 1912 in Lakeshore, Utah, to William Alma Simmons and Mary Ethel Hales. He died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006. He married Mildred Adelene Angell Julyl, 1935, later solemnized sol-emnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mildred died September Sep-tember 2, 2002. They are survived by their five children: Jeneel (Dick) Johnson, Jim (Nancy) Simmons, Sim-mons, Carolyn (David) Nielsen, Dalene (Richard) Duke, and Mary Ann (Doug) Miner; sixteen grandchildren, grandchil-dren, and many great and great-great grandchildren. During high school he earned a scholarship to Utah State College by becoming be-coming and FFA All American. Ameri-can. He took 1st in judging in Spanish Fork and 1st in Utah State. In Kansas City, Kansas at the American Royal Livestock Show his team took 1st in judging horses. He was named rirst of the show in all livestock judging and was awarded All American. Later, because be-cause of his expertise, he was a judge at the Utah State Fair. Lawrence held many jobs in his long career. During WWII he worked at Remington Reming-ton Arms in SLC where an exploding shell damaged his hearing. He worked at Dixon Taylor Russell Furniture store, headquartered in Pro-vo, Pro-vo, where he managed the credit department and collections collec-tions for 25 years. He and Mildred were the owners of Mildred's in Spanish Fork, Provo, Salt Lake and Layton R. Floyd Mle R. Floyd Tuttle, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006. He was born on April 1, 1930 in Springville, Utah, to Francis Lamar Tuttle and Zola Otte-son. Otte-son. , Born on April Fool's Day, Floyd had a positive attitude and a fun loving sense of humor. hu-mor. He served an LDS Mission Mis-sion in the East Central States and upon his return, two weeks later, he married his high school sweetheart, Merilyn Johnson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Floyd loved the Lord, his family and serving others. oth-ers. Church service was the hallmark of Floyd's life. He served in many church callings, call-ings, among them, Bishop of the Mapleton 2nd Ward, an early morning Seminary Teacher, Bishop of the Sandy Young Adult Branch, Stake Presidency member, and full-time full-time missionary with wife, Merilyn. His home was characterized character-ized by an open door, especially espe-cially for his grandchildren who knew that in a pinch Grandpa would help them anytime day or night, sometimes some-times in his P.J.'s. In his retirement re-tirement years he sold used cars for Morris Motors. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he held many positions. His life was full of service to his family and others. He brought out the best in those he met because he only saw the good in them. He lived the principle of loving one another to its fullest. He was as remarkable as he was generous. His honesty and wisdom marked his entire life. He started as a farmer and at 90 years old kept a garden that was meticulous and productive. pro-ductive. He shared the fruits of his labor with anyone who was in need or iust loved good produce. He knew each of his grandchildren by name and knew what they were doing in their lives. He made everyone feel as if they were the one he cared most about. Words cannot adequately ade-quately describe this great man. He is greatly missed. Professor Rufflefeathers (aka Jeni White) brought with her several owls, including Aurora the Barn Owl, and Barney the Great Horned Owl. She asked the owls to deliver "howlers" to the students, but they refused. So she selected a student to deliver the howlers, each of which contained a question about owls. Students then learned about the various species of owls, how they hear, and what they eat. The stu-dents stu-dents were captivated by Professor Rufflefeathers and her f riends.This assembly was part of Westside's reading incentive program pro-gram for this school year, with the theme "Get Curious About Reading." Read-ing." All students who had met their November and December reading goals were treated to a cookie and a short pre-show prior to the assembly. as-sembly. Westside students read a total of 415,162 minutes during the months of November and December, and are well on their way to meeting their million minutes goal. They finished their main season competition last Saturday at the state tournament. tourna-ment. Throughout the year, the team participated in seven sev-en tournaments and placed in all of those tournaments. Going into the state tournament tourna-ment the Middle School team was seeded in first place. They ended up only 3 team points short of bringing home their first state championship champi-onship but finished in a strong second place. The Junior High division finished in fourth place which was also impressive considering they were missing miss-ing 5 wrestlers due to illness.
