John Van Wagoner SHS STAFF WRITER For all of the Springville wrestling fans out there, I have good and bad and great news. Bad news first, the 05-06 05-06 wrestling season is over. The good news is that this year's team did what only one other wrestling team from Springville has ever done, take 3rd place in State! Going into the state tournament tourna-ment everyone was watching out for the Red Devils because be-cause they knew that the team had the ability to upset the two favorites, Mountain Crest and Box Elder (they took 1st and 2nd respectively). respective-ly). The thing that killed the Devils is that on the first day of the tournament there were some upsets that pitted a bunch or Red Devils against each other in matches, so it killed the point potential that the Devils desperately needed. need-ed. The Devils still did a great job with two State Champions-Jason Chamberlain and Kolby Bradley who have won back-to-back titles. Logan Wilson took 2nd, Hayden Petersen, who almost beat Wilson in a semifinal match, took 3rd. Jacob Rawle also took 3rd, which is an awesome accomplishment considering that his weight, 130 pounds, was by far the most loaded weight class with talent in the 4-A competition. The Devils that came in at 5th were Dusty Ratclif fe and Daryk Smith. The 6th place finishers were Devin Bodily, Caleb Christian, Jared Bird, ( I : ' 0 S s it. ZIONS and Danny Hickman, Congrats Con-grats to all the wrestlers! . Now for the great news I told you that I had ... the Red Devil wrestlers have eight members that placed at state who are coining back next year, including a strong JV squad that could take Springville to its first state wrestling title in school history. histo-ry. . Coach Judkins said, "It was an awesome season and I was hoping that we could take 1st 0 BANK or 2nd at State, but I am roud of the guys for taking ird." One more side note, Coach Judkins won the 4-A Coach of the Year award, and next year is going to look to add a state title to his already impressive im-pressive coaching resume. "I would like to thank the wrestlers, the SHS student body and the cities of Springville and Mapleton for an awesome year!" said Coach Judkins. 1 MMB& FOiC |
