TLEASANT GROVE, Sept. 2H Harmony prevailed Inst Saturday in the Republican county convention conven-tion in which six candidates were re-nominated to their respective offices. of-fices. - Senator Reed Smoot was given a rousing demonstration as he entered enter-ed the convention hail late in the afternoon, accompanied by Judge Elins Hansen and J. Ray Ward, United States marshal. Senator Smoot praised the present pres-ent tariff laws, which he characterized character-ized as the finest ever signed by a president. He declared .that it protected pro-tected the farmers more than any previous tariff. Speeches were also made by Judge Hansen and Marshal Ward, in which they predicted an overwhelming over-whelming Republican victory at the coming election. E. II. Street of Payson was made the permanent chairman, following the reports of the committees on organization, platform and credentials, creden-tials, made by their respective chairmen. R. H. Andrus, of Spanish Fork: Henry A. Gardner, of Spanish Span-ish Fork, and Clarence Harmon, of Provo. LeRoy Dixon, of Provo, aud Clifford Clif-ford E. Young, of American Fork, were nominated for tne state senate by acclamation. Mrs. Achsa K. Paxmnn. of Provo, was nominated in similar manner for the house of representatives. J. O. Stone, of Vineyard.-John Roberts of Goshen and George F. Sbeliey or American Fork, were nominated for the legislature! legis-lature! after they bad eliminated James H. Gardner or J.eni. Lehi aud Pleasant Grove bad an interesting duel for the four-year term county commissionership. with '.Martin Christiansen of Ploasan? 'Grove winning from E. A. Bushman. The vote stood 150 to 123. For Christiansen's running mnte lor the commissionership, two-year-term, W. O. Creer was nominated by acclamation. Byron Dastrup. if Trove, won n place on the ticket for the clerkship from John S. Groosbeek of Springville. Spring-ville. by a vote of 1!)." against 92. John T. Taylor, of Payson, was given ITS yores towards the treasurer's treas-urer's office, as agarnst 97 for Ir-tvin Ir-tvin Nelson of Trove. Miss Triscilla Christenson of Salem, Sa-lem, former deputy county' clerk ivas given the nomination for the office of county recorder. She re-reived re-reived 173 votes. Her opponent. Frank Salisbury, of Springville, got 102 votes. A three-cornered fight ensued for the nomination of auditor. Ralph Elliott of Trovo viert with T. F ivirkham of Lehi. and Amnion Tuttle Tut-tle of Spanish Fork for the nomination. nomina-tion. Tuttle won out with 1-17 votes;, while Kirklinm received 93 mid Elliott, 35. Boyd Renominated The largest vote received by any candidate not nominated by acclamation accla-mation was given to Sheriff J. I". Boyd, who was renominated for bis present position. He polled 215 votes as against GO for Wallace Bird, former marshal of Springville. Charles E. Hawkins, of Benjamin, Benja-min, present county assessor, was also renominated. He received 100 votes. Mark Kartchner of Grand View, however, gave him a considerable consid-erable race, collecting 112 votes. Another three-cornered battle ensued en-sued when the nominations for surveyor sur-veyor was called for. Two ballots bad to lie taken before Hugo Trice of Provo was declared the nominee with 137 votes. Tils contestants, E. B. Jones. Lehi. incumbent, and E. A. Jacob, of Provo. received 107 and 2S votes, respectively. The closest battle of the day was for the nomination of county attorney. attor-ney. Milan R. Strnw of Springville and Provo was defeated by the close margin of four votes, getting 132 to 130 for I. E. Brockhank of Provo, incumbent. The convention was called to order or-der by I. E. Brockhank. county chairman. The delegates sang. "America." led by E. A. Beck, director direct-or of the Pleasant Grove high school band, which accompanied the singing, as well as playing several selections prior to the beginning of the convention. Invocation was offered by Dr. T. L. Martin of Provo. Musical selections were given by fhe Allen Bros, quartet of Vineyard Vine-yard and the Lieurance ladies chorus chor-us of Spanish Fork. The official call was read by Claude Salisbury of Springville, temporary secretary. |
