Show Sp.-4 Ernesto P. Ferran Springville man earns medal in Vietnam fighting Sp.-4 Ernesto P. Ferran, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe I. Ferran of this city has returned return-ed home from Vietnam after serving one year with the First Infantry Division of the US Army. He received the Army Commendation Medal while serving there. His citation for his Commendation Commen-dation Medal read as follows: "By direction of the secretary secre-tary of the Army, the Army Commendation Medal is presented presen-ted to Sp.-4 Ernesto P. Ferran, Company E. 1st Engineer Battalion, Bat-talion, 1st Infantry Division, who distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service ser-vice in support of allied coun-terinsurgency coun-terinsurgency operations in the Republic of Vietnam. During .the period of October 1968 to October 1969 he astutely surmounted sur-mounted extremely a d v erse conditions to obtain consistently consistent-ly superior results. Through diligence and determination he invariably accomplished every task with dispatch and efficiency. effi-ciency. His unrelenting loyalty, initiative and perserverance brought him wide acclaim and inspired others to strive for maximum achievement." Sp.-4 Ferran is a graduate of Springville High School. He entered the Armed Forces in May of 1968, and left for Vietnam Viet-nam in October of that same year. While in Vietnam he served as a jeep operator. According Ac-cording to a letter received by his parents from his Battalion Commander, Rodney E. Cox, Sp.-4 Ferran "has been an outstanding out-standing asset to the officers that he has driven for (while in Vietnam) and has constantly given them advice and assistance assis-tance on platoon problems. Ernesto's Er-nesto's professional work along with his 'can do' attitude has served as a fine example for his fellow soldiers. The host of complex problems presented here in Vietnam require the dedication of men like your son to their responsibilites. Ernesto Er-nesto has significantly contributed contrib-uted through his 100 per cent effort to the proud tradition of the First Infantry Division." $Fk HI "For a change I'm not going to insist on the usual formality of a vote.
