In the May number of the Ladies' Home .Journal (1904), Mr. Edward Bok. the editor, stated that Dr. conPierce's Favorite Prescription tained alcohol and some other harmful Ingredients, and Dr. Pierce had In the action allpged that the defendant maliciously published this article containing such fulre and defamatory Dr. Pierce further claimed matter. that no alcohol Is or ever was contained In Ills Favorite Prescript ion, that said medicine was a vegetable preparation and contained no delete! During the trial, the of the Worlds Dispensary Medical Association stnted, that the Ingredients of Dr. Pierces Favorite Prescription were extracted from the following native roota: Holden Seal. Blue Cohosh, ladys Slipper, Black Cohosh and Unicorn, by means of pure glycerine. He was asked how be knew, as a physician and experienced medical man, that the "Favorite Prescription wag a cure for the diseases peculiar to women, such is amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and he stated '.hat he knew such was the fact because of hla professional experience tnd the many thousands of women whose Ills had been cured by this "Prescription," The being asked to give his authorities, rend from the standard works, such 8 the United States Dispensatory, The American Dispensatory and many other standard medical books. The question arose why some of the coins were denoted by letters that had nothing at all to do with their selling, and there was not one In the crowd, though there were some nominally people present, who could tell the significance of the letters till the question was looked up. It appeared thut the pound sterling mark was simply a capital I., with a line drawn across the stem. It came from the Latin word "librae, meaning a pound. The "d used for the penny came also from the Latin, meaning "denarius, originally a small Roman sliver coin, but later having developed into a generic term for money and specifically for a small copper coin of Insignificant value. The "lb" mark, also used for the avoirdupois pound, came from the same word librae"" as in Saxon times the pound avoirdupois was the same weight as a pound sterling of silver and the shilling was of this, making the old shilling about three times the size of the present one. When It came to the dollar mark, there waa more discussion, there being half a dozen explications for this sign, But the most likely seemed to be that it wag simply a modified flgure "8," there having been eight silver reals In the old Spanish dollar, or "piece of eight, In uso In this country long before the Introduction of American currency. d ante-versio- n retro-versio- Dyspepsia Caused by Eye Strain.
