remained to him of the Was wealth at gold that had been his that morn IngThen Then began the most trying journey that a human being ever undertook a Journey that led through the mountains and des 1ts of northern Mexico and ended In the Jail at San Antonio Tex Without a horse CralguE progress through the moun talus was slow and as he dared not shoot at game for fear of attracting tho attention of Indians he was forced to eat roots and berries gathered along tho waterways When Cralgh finally emerged fron the mountains and started to cross the alkali plains he was crazed by th hardships h2 had endured and lost all sense of direction He clung tc the idea that help could bo found tc the eastward and pressed on in thai direction How long he walked h < does not know but as he lay upon his bo 1 In the hospital he talked con tlnually of the terrible sun and begged piteouFly for water Finally ho staggered into the camt of a company of Mexican soldiers and although they cared for him and gave him food anl water he was many days before ho rould tell of his Journey Overjoyed at tho sight of tho soldiers ho told them of his gold mine and of Its wonderful richness The story of tho mine excited the cupidity of the soldiers and the lieutenant lieu-tenant in command of the party demanded de-manded that Cralgh guide them bach to the spot This Cralgh refused to do and by orders of the officer he was beaten with a whip and told that he would bo beaten to death unless he led tho soldiers to the mine That night Cralgh managed to stea away and escape from the soldiers Still weak from tho effects of his journey Jour-ney through tho desert ho again SOl his race to the eastward Cralghs memory of what took placi after his escape from tho soldiers camp Is vague Most of the time h must have been demented Ho says that he remembers finding streams ot water and lying down to wallow full length In tho lifeglvlng fluid then leaving the stream to turn his footsteps foot-steps to the east Later he reached the more thickly thicklyn settled portion of tho country and the peons and ranchmen fed him The Mexicans looked upon his strange looking figure and staring eyes and said that he was a Iocoand In 1 Mexico a crazy man need never want t for food or shelter as tho natives look upon him with superstitious awe The strangest part of Cralghs story Is the way he followed the true course like a homing pigeon straight to his old rome for his father who formerly lived in Chicago him a farm neal Boerno Tex 20 miles east of San Antonio An-tonio and It Is supposed that he was making for his fathers farm when he was arrested With his mind made a wreck by the terrible hardships he had endured and with only his voice of instinct calling him home William Cralgh finIshed fin-Ished his Journey Cralghs father and brother are now at San Antonio They corroborate his I story up to the time he left Hermo slllo Mexico for tho Yaqul country and show a letter received from him from that town There is little doubl that the wonderful mine really exist and there Is some talk of organizing an expedition to search for It The doctors say that it will bo mans weeks before Cralgh will be able U I leave
