Show A14 • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2010 orts SP a Guardian of Your Community New Dons get revenge over Salem M .-4 Chad Vest STAFF WRITER Salem got off to a fast start Friday night at Spanish Fork. After their threepoint home victory over SF in previous weeks, the Skyhawks raced to a 12point lead (28-16) in the second quarter with some high percentage shots due to great inside play from junior Jordan Robles and hot shooting from London Simonson, who had 10 points in the first quarter. The Uof-U bound football star was a beast down low, grabbing every rebound in sight. With no answer for the big man, the Dons inserted 6'5" sophomore Kayden Porter to help slow him down midway thru the second. "They came out pretty hot," said Coach Cook. "Kayden did a great job of pushing [Robles] around. Kayden was big and strong enough to take away some of their easy plays down low." After midway thru the second, SF finished out the quarter outscoring Salem 17-6 to knot it at" 30. The Skyhawks put up a good fight to begin the third, but the Dons' Ren Williamsen caught fire and continued to scorch the Scoreboard with big shots to cruise to a 77-61 victory in the Don Dome. Some big boards down low and easy shots helped Salem go on a 6-0 run for a 14-8 advantage in the first. After leading 16-13 in the second, the Skyhawks began to soar with some aerial assaults from downtown. Joseph Mohrman helped his team go on an 8-0 run with two treys and a deuce to force an SF timeout at the five-minute mark with the score at 26—16. After being down by as many as 12, the Dons came alive with great defense and shooting from a trio of players: Hales, Still, Williamsen. Salem lead 30-27 with three seconds before intermission, but Williamsen was fouled on a trey ball and evened the score at the break. Jake Skinner soared to the rim for a beautiful alley-oop lay-in to begin the third and keep pace with the home team. However, the red and gray went on a 9-2 run with several big treys from sophomore Hayden Nielsen and Williamsen. Later in the quarter, the senior sharp-shooter had a chance for a four-point play as he nailed a three-pointer with a man in his face. After missing the freebie, SF increased its lead by 12 at 49-37 to finish the third. The Skyhawks converted a three-point play to begin the fourth and grab back some momentum, but the Dons began to run away with this one, knocking down shots with most of them coming from the charity stripe in the final minutes. For Salem, three players were in double figures. Skinner and Simonsen scored 18 and 15, respectively. Mohrman also ended up with 10.
