Spanish Fork was anxious to defend home court and maintain their hold on second place in regions. The game was a tale of two half's as the Lady Dons swept the season series with a 40-23 victory. Spanish Fork established the post game early as Brynlie Nielsen found Erin Redd inside for the first 4 points of the quarter. Salem struggled scoring early in the first quarter and the SF defense created Skyhawk turnovers. SF rebounding and blocked shots dominated the game early and the Lady Dons led 1-A after the first period. Each team took its turn at multiple turnovers in the second quarter. Neither team could create any offensive momentum. The Dons tried some early substitutions that slowed down their of- fensive momentum. Salem took their first lead of the game at 9-7 as Erika Adams scored 4 quick points as the SF guards struggled to defend. The Lady Dons reinserted their starters who quickly turned the momentum as SF scored 6 points in the last 2 minutes led by Senior Shea Johnson with 4 points. Salem scored 7 points in the second quarter closing the gap, and SF escaped a sluggish second quarter taking a 13-11 at halftime. The Lady Dons came out running in the third quarter as Brynlie Nielsen ran the SF fast break to perfection. Salem struggled with offensive turnovers and the Dons defense capitalized. Salem went stone cold in the third quarter; Lyssa Hanks scored 4 of the Skyhawks 5 points. The Dons enjoyed a balanced scoring attack led by Redd with 8 points, Nielsen posted 4 assist and Spanish Fork opened up a commanding 29-16 lead after three quarters. The Lady Dons ran an effective high low post game as Redd and Emerine combined for 8 of the 11 points in the fourth quarter and the Lady Dons celebrated a 40-23 victory. "Salem played us very tough in the first half, but I like the adjustments and the determination the Dons displayed in the second half. We have really been working on our fast break and Brynlie ran it to perfection. When this team runs the floor SF is hard to beat. The girls just had fun and played their game and it was fun to watch" said Coach Johnson. The Lady Dons sit in second place with a record of 4 - 1 . Spanish Fork will travel to Springville to battle for first place on Feb 2, 2010. Salem stands in third place at 3-3 and will host Uintah on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Springville's Raul Delgado put up 23 points, and two other Red Devils also scored in double-figures. 'The final score was not what I wanted, but overall, our guys really did play a lot better, especially the first half," said Maple Mountain coach Johnny Averett. "We shot better than what we have in a long time, and even defensively, we tried to take away their inside game, and I think we did a good job on that, considering we are so undersized against Springville, because they are a very big team." Coach Averett was especially pleased with Cameron Starr's performance. "I knew he could shoot like that. It's been a long time since we've had that. I know all our guys can shoot like that, and, you know, I hope before too long they all start hitting like they can, and like Cam did tonight." Springville jumped out to a big lead early on, leading 17-6 at the end of the first quarter. Then Maple Mountain rallied offensively in the second quarter, scoring 17 points, including four three-pointers. The Golden Eagles continued to struggle on defense, however, as Springville answered those scores with 22 second quarter points of their own.
