Vaitohi took second in the event with a jump of 5'0". She also placed in the 100m dash and the long jump. Salem Hills hosts track meet Namon Bills EDITOR Provo, North Sanpete and Payson traveled to Salem Hills for a track meet Tuesday, March 17,2009. The Salem Hills boys team took first place with 97.5 team points. Jason Anderson won the 100m dash in 11.18 seconds and the boys 4xl00m relay team of Anderson, Billy Fairbanks, Josh Adarris" and Jake Skinner took second with 45.62. The boys 4x400m relay team of Tucker Pinder, Parker Dunn, Adams and Anderson won their event with a time of 3:35.12. Salem's strong performance as Region 8 cross country champs in the fall seems to be paying off in the distance events. They swept the top four spots in the 800m; Tucker Pinder finished first at 2:09.47, followed by Tannen Fawcett, Alex Minson and James Wright. Tyler Gebert and Justin Sly went one-and-two in the 1600m, at 4:55.03 and 4:58.66, respectively. " The "Skyhawks also took the top four spots in the 3200m; Justin Sly finished first at 11:26.44, followed by Alex Minson, Tannen Fawcett and Tyler Gebert. The boys also won the 1600m sprint medley in 3:53.44 with a team composed of Jace Spencer, Reese Knuteson, Blake Adams and Tyler Gebert. In the field events, Jake Skinner had a big day, winning both the high jump and long jump. His high jump was 6'0" and his long jump was 19' even. Jordan Robles and Kyle Shuler added point in the discus, finishing second and third, respectively. Robles longest throw was'95'7.5", and Shuler had 91'9". The Lady Skyhawks finished fourth overall. Jo Julian won the 100m hurdles in 18.93 and Siale Vaitohi took third in the 100m dash with a time of 13.00. Ju- lian and Vaitohi finished two-three in the long jump, with jumps of 15*7.5" and 14*8.5", respectively. The versatile Vaitohi also placed in the high jump, taking second with a jump of 5'0". Also in the field, Lindsay Fulton threw 59'9" to take second in the javelin. The girls' 4x400m relay team of Julian, Karlee Loss, Cosette Stone and Mickenna Belliston took first with" a time of 4:28.88. Stone and Loss finished third and fourth in the 800m with times of 2:41.75 and 2:43.44, respectively. Stone also finished fourth in the 1600m with a time of 5:55.84. In a four-way meet between American Fork, Park City,Timpanogos and Spanish Fork High Schools, the Spanish Fork Dons placed second overall in both boys and girls track. Leading the way for the Lady Dons was multisport star Erin Redd with a win in the girls javelin at 89'7" and a second place finish in the high jump. Erin came close to the 5' height but settled for a 4'10" jump. Kaitlyn Urmston placed second in the girls shot put with a throw of 30'. Sophomore hurdler Jenn Huntsman also had a big day with two first place finishes in the 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles. Big finishes in the boys competition came from senior David Nester, who produced his best outdoor time of 2:01 in the 800m run. Nester ran by himself as no one came within 40 meters of his finish. He also teamed up with Tyler Hull, Brent Strong and Justin Crandall to win the 4x400 meter relay. In the 400m race, Justin Crandall and Brandon Poulter both finished in the top three. Distance standout Spencer Hanson placed second in the 1600m with a season-best 4:45, while coming back later to win the 3200m in 10:24. In the boys javelin, junior Kyler Gilstrap placed first with a throw of 135*5". For a first year thrower, Kyler has picked up the event quickly. Uili Makai placed second in the shot put, with Tevita Vaitohi and Klint King both going over the 40' mark. Junior high jumper Parker Cressman continued his unbeaten steak by winning that event. Senior Luke Besendorfer placed second in the discus with a throw of 114' 7". Freshman Christian Taele continues to impress by taking second in the boys long jump along with a strong third-place finish in the 100 meter dash. Track and field next finds the Dons at the Provo Bulldog Invitational. Doug Snell up for national honor Kaydee O'Brien SFHS Spanish Fork High School's Coach Doug Snell will be honored as the Southwest District Athletic Director of the Year. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) will award Coach Snell during their national convention in Tampa, Fla., March 30April4,2009. Snell has served as either a coach or director of athletics for Spanish Fork High School for over 21 years. At the convention he will vie with five other district winners from around the country for the "National Athletic Director of the Year Award." This award started over 34 years ago. The purpose of this program is to give recognition to athletic ad- ministrators around the country who exemplify the highest standards of their profession. The National Athletic Director of the Year Award recipient will be announced on Friday, April 3, 2009. According to NASPE President Fran Cleland of West Chester University of Pennsylvania, "By making a significant impact on the lives of the students, Doug Snell has ma4e an outstanding contribution to his school and community. He is also recognized as an administrator of an exemplary athletic program and educator who keeps athletics an integral part of the total education program." Spanish Fork High School Principal Dave McKee, said, "I have never seen, heard of, or associated with an athletic director with more passion for athletics, and desire to do his job right, and motivation to improve everything he associates with. He fully understands the role that extra-curricular activities should play for all students/athletes. His passion motivates and inspires our students to reach for the important things, and teaches them correct life principles. Students and teachers respect him for the excellence he portrays in his job and everyday life." Among his many accomplishments. Coach Snell has created a successful Reading and Recess program at Spanish Fork High School. The program consists of athletes from Spanish Fork High School going to local elementary schools to spread the word about how athletics and academics go hand in.hand by the athletes reading their favorite book to a class and then playing with them at recess. SAM'S PREP OF THE WEEK Spanish fork Baseball Team The Dons won the Sunshine Tournament for the fifth straight year in convincing fashion, outscoring their opponents 46-4.
