Soccer Dons defeat Jags in double OT Debra Frehner STAFF WRITER Spanish Fork High School Varsity Boys Soccer team traveled north Tuesday to take on the West Jordan Jags in a thrilling double-overtime and chalked up the win. It was an exciting time on the field as The Don's Christian Chichia made the golden goal, and was promptly dog-piled by his teammates. Thursday's game against Mt. View didn't turn out quite as well, with the Bruins taking the win 4-1. Last Friday was a game against Provo, which ended in a 3-1 loss for the Dons. At the West Jordan game, the Jags scored the first goal. They went on to score a second goal, but it was called back due to a foul on the keeper. Cameron Bardsley made a great header at the back post of the goal to keep the Jags from knocking on the back door. In the final two minutes of regulation time Riley Dinehart tied the score with a goal assisted by Christian Chichia. The game went into the first overtime, and after 10 minutes of OT play, the score was still tied at 1-1. About half way through the second overtime, Dinehart returned the favor and gave an assist to Chichia who scored a goal to win the game, and the Dons went wild. On Thursday they traveled to Orem to take on Mt. View. The Bruins won the ball and scored on the first drive and quickly got it back to score again. That was when Spanish Fork kicked in their defense. Goalkeeper Chet Harmer stopped three in a row, diving under kicking feet to save the ball. Mt. View bounced one more in the corner of the net just before half time, and the score at the half was 3-0. In the second half the Dons stepped up their defense even more, and blocked several attempts. Mt. View had a corner kick attempt which turned, into a circus act of head juggling until the ball was finally cleared of the goal. The Bruins managed to sneak in one more goal in the final moments of play to end the score at 4-0. Last week the season was kicked off. On March 13,2009 the Dons played at home against the Provo Bulldogs. It was a chilly day on the field, where just before game day several inches of snow had fallen. The team had cleared the field by rolling the snow off, lining the edges with huge snowballs and a few snow people. Interspersed amongst the snow people sat the faithful fans bundled in their coats, hats, gloves, scarves and boots and wrapped in blankets. But the cold weather didn't seem to bother the players as they played their hearts out. It was a tough game, and Provo tried to shut Spanish Fork out, but the Dons'" Lucas Lima delivered a goal in the final minutes the game, which ended with a score of 3-1. Y |
